Problem with VLC and .mov extension

Postby Strife » 05 May 2006 14:25

Hello Everybody !

I've a problem with VLC. I can read some kind of files with .mov extension but when i do a video in a .mov with a DV/PAL compression, i can't read it on VLC. It works on Quicktime but i want to read the file with VLC only.

THanks for your responses !!

While VLC does support the MOV container it may not support the format inside the container.

Check out the Main page under supported formats.

There is always the Feature Requests section of this forum.

I do not know why, but VLC 0.8.2 can play mov files, the same files are not played by next versions of VLC even by newest 0.8.5 one.
Why?

For that reason I still have to use 0.8.2 for my recorded movies.

.mov is a container! What are the formats inside the container (Audio & Video)????

VLC supports all the standard forms that QuickTime supports IE. H.264 and MP4v for Video and MP4a (AAC) for audio. This has not changed in recent versions. You can look in Media Information while playing the video in VLC and it will tell you the formats in use.

Yes, I just installed the latest version, as 0.8.2 would play mov files taken from my new digital camera, but the sound was was cutting in and out, like when you're streaming but the connection isn't good, so a player has to keep rebuffering. Now with 0.8.5 the sound is great, but there is no picture. It is 'motion jpeg' format.

OK! VLC does support 'motion jpeg' but starting with 0.8.4 the DirectX module was rebuilt to be more compatible with 9c this has forced many users to update there sound and or video drivers as recommended by Microsoft. This should also show up in other formats. If you want to prove it for yourself shut down DirectX in Preferences, Video, Output modules from the pull down select "Windows GDI video output" Then press Save and close the player. This method will put more weight on your CPU.

I am not sure that I really understand what you are saying, but I have DX 9c, and it does not seem to have any problems (earlier versions would fail some tests), and the files will play audio only regardless of the output I select (DirectX, Windows GDI, auto.... ). They will play fine in Quicktime.

OK! I will make this simpler. If you want to run any version of VLC beyond 0.8.2 it will be necessary to update your Video and possibly Sound drivers. This occurred for most XP users at the advent of SP2 or for other users who updated to DirectX 9c. This was and is recommended by Microsoft. If you want to run the older program it will probably still work with out the updates.

Pardons for a "dummies" type question, but, how would one go about discovering what filetypes are inside a given .mov container? And, given that .mov is an Apple/Mac convention, wouldn't it/they likely be other Apple/Mac formats/conventions, most of which VLC already plays willingly?

When using QT there is an information window you can open that will tell you what's in the container.

When using VLC there is Media Information that will do something similar and more in 0.8.5

If you can't get the file to run there are third party utilities like GSpot that will tell you what's inside and recommend Direct Show Codecs. This is a good way to stay away from ffdshow and codec packs. Also there are ways IE utilities that make it reasonably easy to compare and manage codecs. You can also watch them in action and know why something is happening or not as the case may be.

Actually I was unaware that QT supported Mjpeg or Raw DV under Windows without third party support. There is (for example) support MP3 and AAC but not MPGa or MP2a. The number of supported standard formats is rather limited to their own under MP4 and MOV. Of coarse I could say something similar about Microsoft as they are always pushing their own formats and containers without much regard for anyone else.

0.8.5 doesn't play .mov files..!

Postby MQ » 15 May 2006 07:38

I know I know, it's just a container... But the new version 0.8.5 stopped playing the video clips generated from my digital camera althought 0.8.4a played them with no problem.

Having updated my drivers, I still have no picture playing .mov MJPEG files.

BTW, are we really saying that VLC will now essentially not work for people without updated drivers, EVEN IF the same files play perfectly in other programs (ie Quicktime)? This seems to be a rather dramatic step backwards.

It must be a bug

Postby Guest » 15 May 2006 13:10

I (being the person who wrote the sixth, eighth, and 13th posts), just installed 0.8.4, and it plays the files perfectly. Much better, in fact, than Quicktime, which has flickery glitches in the picture, which I had assumed were in the recordings because I was using a camera memory card that is slower than recommended.
Yes, 0.8.4 plays them perfectly, and 0.8.5 does not, so it seems to me that it must be a bug, as I am not the only one having problems with this type of file.

Same here, mov files (made with the digital camera) which played fine with 0.8.4a dont show a picture with 0.8.5 - tried it on different machines.

So is this a bug or a feature?

.mov with 0.8.5

Postby Sboub » 24 May 2006 09:22

Hello,

I've the same problem : VLC 0.8.4 runned perfectly with files .mov but 0.8.5 don't work with .mov ! I've only the cursor which turns.

I'm the "Guest" that listed which posts were mine.
I can confirm what DWA said about the error messages - masses means one for each frame I think.
I also get this once:
mp4 warning: DEMUX_GET_FPS unimplemented !!

and this twice:
mp4 warning: unknown box type alis (uncompletetly loaded)

I can also confirm that this is a problem with just the Windows VLC (we just got VLC 0.8.5 going in Puppy Linux (:D hooray!!) and it plays the files from my camera fine; and just with motion JPEG files (or at least not with all .mov files, as it will certainly play some - incidentally some others will not play the audio).
Normal JPEGs display fine, and I haven't come across any files other than .mov with Motion JPEG streams.
I'm just wondering what Windows version others that have encountered this problem are running, as I have Win98?

It is possible that it is a library that was forgotten during the build. I have seen other modules appear and disappear from build to build like DTS.

Problem with VLC and .mov extension

Postby Guest » 25 Jun 2006 21:08

I also had a problem playing a mov file I downloaded with VLC, yet after much research and not finding many working solutions, I came up on somebody's advice to just rename the mov file to mp4 which actually ended up working, not sure if that will work for all mov files though.

Please create a new topic. Do not kick up old ones.
mjpeg debug: we found another JPEG SOI at 709
mjpeg debug: JPEG EOI detected at 3728
mjpeg debug: we found another JPEG SOI at 5117
mjpeg debug: JPEG EOI detected at 8136
mjpeg debug: did not find JPEG EOI in 15360 bytes
it seems that JPEG image support is broken in current builds.
