Subtitle downloads doesn't work on external SD on Kindle Fire

Postby qmatteoq » 10 Jun 2020 13:09

Hello,
I’m an happy user of VLC on my Kindle Fire HD 10 but, currently, I’m experiencing a blocking issue.
I heavily use the automatic subtitles download feature but, suddenly, it stopped working if the video file is stored on a SD card.
When I tap on the button to download the subtitle, I quickly see the icon spinning and the download notification being displayed at the top, but after a few the notifications goes away and the icon returns normal.
If I explore the SD card storage with ES File Manager, I can’t see any .srt file there.

If, instead, I move the same exact file in the internal memory and I try the operation again, I can see the “OK” icon appearing at the end of the download and the subtitle being loaded correctly.

It looks like a permission issue but:

1) It’s the first time I face it since I started using VLC for Fire
2) Since Kindle Fire isn’t running standard Android, I don’t find a way to change the permissions of the app

The only information I can see is that the application is indeed requesting permissions to read and write from the SD card when I install it from the Fire Store.

I’m using version 3.2.12.

Could you please provide some logs?

Go in the Settings > Advanced > Debug logs > Start logging

Then reproduce the issue, dump logcat logs and attach the file here.

I'm following this thread, as I too see this in a Tab A (2019). When I attempt to download subtitles for a video on my SD card, the download icon spins, but the checkmark never appears, and no subtitle file is saved. If I move the video to the /Downloads folder (internal memory) the subtitle downloads and is saved to the /Downloads folder.

I'm guessing this is a rights issue, however the VLC app can delete videos from the external (SD) card, but cannot save downloads. I'm wondering if there is another package (browser?) that is responsible for the download that needs to be granted access to the SD card.

Very frustrating as I must copy videos from the DS card to internal memory to download subtitles. This is Android version 9.

Basically I started log; cleared log; opened/paused video located on SD card; selected download subtitles; selected subtitled to download; watched indicator spin and stop. Then back-arrowed my way to dump logcat.

OK... but no access to that path. So here is clipboard...

OK... log is too long to post, and I don't see how to attach text file.

Now what?

I have this exact same problem on my shield and my sons Media box since we installed update 3.2.12
