VLC should remember subtitle/audio/video track settings...

Hi,

Sorry to hijack on old thread (I can't find any other mention in the forum, but this still appears to be a problem in version 2.1.1. The "preferred audio language" setting still does not work.

Preferences=>Audio=>Preferred audio language.

This is a bug that goes back many years that doesn't seem to have been addressed. Has anyone had any success? It doesn't matter what entry to put in the field (EN, ENG, English, etc.) it still chooses either the default audio track (in my case track 1, or a track you have specified in the preferences.) When my preferred audio track changes between different files it is very frustrating.

To finish on a positive note, VLC player is an awesome product that I have been using since 0.8x and will continue to use for many years to come. Keep up the good work, Thanks.

EDIT: This is using an .avi or .mkv file not a DVD, where the audio track is just called "Track 1", "Track 2", etc. There is speculation elsewhere that the Preferred audio language field only works for DVDs, although I cannot test.

Hello, much like russieb, I hate to revive an old thread, but I'm experiencing a similar issue myself.

I just downloaded a series (Sword Art Online) And at first, the default Audio was set to english, with subtitles only appearing for the OP and ED songs. I have since changed the preferred language to Japanese, which allows the videos to play as I want them, in terms of audio. My issue lies in the subtitle tracks.

The videos have 2 Subtitle Tracks;

The one that is active by default is the track which shows subs for the Opening and Ending songs as well as the various signs within the episodes. It is listed in the player as "English Signs/Songs [English]"

The track I want to use as well is the second track listed, which is the general subtitles for the entire episode. It is listed as "English Subtitles [English]"

Is there any way to activate them both? If not, then how can I select the second one to be default, so that I don't have to keep choosing between the 2?

I too watch alot of anime on my comp using nothing but VLC and DivX(sometimes). I too noticed that depending on who released the fan sub\dub the audio and soft-subtitles could be:
A) Not marked
B)Inconsistent with other shows\episodes

I think that there should be some kind of standard or written or unwritten golden rule about labeling sub and dub tracks so that something like this is possible. Till then we just have to live with it or change the settings on the said-player (This case VLC) each time we change shows. If you stop in the middle and go to watch a video clip you would have to change the settings again to play the clip correctly then back again to continue watching the first show again. If anything is discovered to fix this feel free to let me know at your earliest convenience!!

Is there a way to make a .ini file or equivalent for a folder? Most of what have is consistent within a folder. So, if we could make a setting file for a folder once it is done its done. Just click video and VLC uses folder setting file to temporarily override saved settings.

Not an INI files but maybe it's possible with m3u playlist. See this post :

The "preferred audio language" setting frequently doesn't work for me because the audio tracks are labeled only "Track 1," "Track 2," etc. It would be nice if VLC saved the settings I choose for a video file at least as long as it is the active file (i.e. between pressing "Stop" and "Play." As it is, I have to load the file, pause playback, set all of the options, then drag the playback slider back to the start position for each of these files.

Bumping this thread because I feel this issue has never been addressed. It's quite simple. Make VLC remember the last subtitle, audio setting used. I don't know anything about programming. But it does not seem like such a hard thing to allow the program to remember the last option used. I watch anime quite often. 26 episodes total.....I hate the idea that I have to right click and select my audio and subtitle every episode. This program is amazing, I will donate more if i ever see this little feature implemented.

Either a set this audio/subtitle as default preference tab. or allow it to remember last preferred language. I'm pretty sure not many would go, I like to listen to the next file in another language.

Actually it should be very basic to save the current choices of audio and subtitle tracks for the current session. Its a pretty basic feature to at least remember these for the current movie so the user doesn't have to rechoose everytime the title/chapter changes during the movie. This is very apparent in series shows where a number of individual shows are on the same DVD/Blu Ray and they are played one after another.

I would classify this as a bug since its not the expected way the program should work.

well i have never looked at the vlc source code but maybe I will take your challenge...

It should be obvious that since VLC has an application 'settings' screen then settings are saved for the application. You can find these on os x in either '~/Library/Application Support/org.videolan.vlc/ml.xspf' or in '~/Library/Preferences/org.videolan.vlc/vlcrc'. Other OS's have similar files. 'ml.xspf' is the 'media library' file, which would be one appropriate place.

After reading all your comments, i was still pissed that i couldn't get into bed and watch my series of simpsons downloaded in AVI files with it defaulting to "track 1" audio and blaring at me in spanish every 20 minutes.

to fix i did the following:

tool > all settings > input /codecs > then changed audio track and audio track ID from -1 which was it's default to 2 (as Audio Track 2 is the english, Track 1 the spanish) now when i skip episode when playing the whole folder, it defaults Track 2 allowing me to peak my laziness.

This stores the name of the subtitle in a variable inside of the memory when the user selects a language

Then later when a new videofile starts playing this code can run
