PLaylist - Details vs Icons

Postby Australis » 23 Mar 2012 14:09

Hi, I'm new here, though I've been using VLC for a long time and always found it a great player, easy to use and does everytthing I want. But I have hit a snag with the newly installed 2.0.

In 1.x, the Playlist used to come up as, well, a list, the same way Windows Explorewr has a Detaiuls view: Song, Arist, Album, Duration. Now it coems up with clunky icons that aren't, to me, as user friendly. I'm assuming there's a setting where I can revert to the Details style, but I'm damned if I can see it. I can shrink the icons, but that's not much use if they're too small to read.

Can anyone help me out?

Thanks!

Ohhh the button on the same line as Playlist, next to the Search box!

It just didn't seem that obvious that's what it was for. Tnanks, much appreciated!

I had same question - happened to find this thread searching 'icons'

Pretty damn poor to put a button like that in such a place - totally anti-intuitive - and unmarked - who the heck is going over there with a 'mouse over' move.

Mark the button properly and/or put the choice under 'View'

This is a button like iTunes. near the search box. VLC does not have that many buttons...

I know this is an old topic, but I just registered to reply.

I only found this by googling because I was ready to uninstall VLC and go back to Windows Media Player. I've been using VLC for years, I know the GUI. I'm also technically proficient, so it's not like I didn't know what I was doing. But I'm being dead serious here - since the last VLC update, I completely STOPPED using the playlist because of the retarded, completely unless icon playlist. It's completely and utterly worthless. Gee, I can see the same album art ten times in a row, with the name of the album and maybe the artist! Who cares what the individual song is? I've been working around it for months, and I was ready to throw the thing out because of this. I decided to google just in case anyone else thought it was a problem.

That icon is small, it's not labelled, and as far as I can tell, THERE IS NO OTHER WAY TO CHANGE THE VIEW. So let me get this straight - you've only got one way to change the playlist layout. This button is unlabelled. It has no tooltip. There is no documentation anywhere on what it is, what it does, or how the playlist works. If I had trouble figuring it out and wasted months suffering... well, what do you think your average, non-technical user is going to do? Hint: Uninstall the program and never look back. The product has borderline worthless playlist functionality (initially) and absolutely no clear documentation on how to fix it (click one unlabelled, undocumented button with a weird, unrecognizable icon).

I registered just to reply here, too. I agree with every single thing the previous commenter said. Plus, I would add this:

You have offered the option to choose between thumbnails or details, just like Windows Explorer. So you should make the process of choosing between them just like Windows Explorer, as well. That means View->Details. Or List.

I, too, am no tech newbie. And I, too, have used this program for years. Yet I, too, had to Google for this solution. I couldn't even find it in documentation. Is this not part of the interface?

So, yeah, lose the button or make it an option from the same location it used to be in. But, also, as an option from the View list. Please, can someone just take care of this? It really is for the good of the program.
