I know this is an old topic, but I just registered to reply.
I only found this by googling because I was ready to uninstall VLC and go back to Windows Media Player. I've been using VLC for years, I know the GUI. I'm also technically proficient, so it's not like I didn't know what I was doing. But I'm being dead serious here - since the last VLC update, I completely STOPPED using the playlist because of the retarded, completely unless icon playlist. It's completely and utterly worthless. Gee, I can see the same album art ten times in a row, with the name of the album and maybe the artist! Who cares what the individual song is? I've been working around it for months, and I was ready to throw the thing out because of this. I decided to google just in case anyone else thought it was a problem.
That icon is small, it's not labelled, and as far as I can tell, THERE IS NO OTHER WAY TO CHANGE THE VIEW. So let me get this straight - you've only got one way to change the playlist layout. This button is unlabelled. It has no tooltip. There is no documentation anywhere on what it is, what it does, or how the playlist works. If I had trouble figuring it out and wasted months suffering... well, what do you think your average, non-technical user is going to do? Hint: Uninstall the program and never look back. The product has borderline worthless playlist functionality (initially) and absolutely no clear documentation on how to fix it (click one unlabelled, undocumented button with a weird, unrecognizable icon).
