Sometimes subtitles aren't displayed by default

I set subtitles are displayed by default(default setting). However, subtitles are not displayed by default for only some files(after playing a file and setting subtitles from menu, subtitles are displayed).
For same kind files, subtitles may or may not be displayed, and I cannot get a clue as to the cause.

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

This depends on the subtitle properties and the user settings. Some media formats can specify that subtitles are disabled by default.

ARIB subtitles of recorded TV ts file. Embedded subtitles.
But ASS subtitles of encoded mkv file are displayed by default.

And, now I noticed that subtitles aren't displayed by default for all ts files(not only some files). Probably after installing VLC nightly builds and uninstalling and re-installing normal VLC(Version 3.0.17.4).
Now I uninstalled VLC(and deleted settings and cache) and installed again, but subtitles aren't displayed by default.

Are subtitles of a ts file displayed by default if changing settings?

A file size of a ts file is about 3GB so I can't upload. It seems that DGsplit can no longer be downloaded.

Hmm..., I accessed the URL and clicked "DOWNLOAD NOW" and clicked "DOWNLOAD: External mirror 1" and went to download page but download didn't begin and "CLICK TO START MANUALLY" link didn't work, either. in addition, I was redirected to non-related page( https://neuron2.net ).

I split the ts file by TMPGEnc MPEG Smart Renderer 6. First 200MB part doesn't contain subtitles so I uploaded first 500MB part.

Yes, because it looks like TMPGEnc has reencoded it, or at least reencapsulated it:

Japanese subtitles of encoded mkv files are shown correctly by default so Japanese language is not the cause, I think.

At least they work, VLC can display them which is not the case of many other media players.
That said, I haven't found a way to force them to be displayed apart from remuxing the video to MKV and to use the Forced Track flag for the subtitles.
I'm afraid you have to manually enable them. Or maybe someone else will bring a solution.

Hmm... But only a week ago, subtitles are displayed by default for ts files, too. Is it because I installed VLC Nightly Build once?

I don't think it's about the nightly build because v3.0.17.4 release is doing the same.

It's not mentioned in the installation instructions as far as I can tell, but the file extension has to be renamed to .luac for it to be recognized by vlc. It's called Subtitler (lite) mod.lua in its raw state. I installed it myself and it appears correctly as an extension in the View menu. Here's a pix.

This page says "The extension will try to load SRT subtitle file of the same name and location as a playing media" but my ts files have no external subtitle files.

By the way, I have a backup of C drive as of June 7th. Please tell me the locations of VLC related files(e.g. setting files), then I copied the files from backup and may be able to return to the original state.

Settings are stored in %APPDATA%\VLC folder.
If it works, I'm curious to know which setting is involved.
If it doesn't work then please upload a sample file which 'works'.

VLC settings are located in %APPDATA%\vlc. Make a backup of "vlc-qt-interface.ini" and "vlcrc" files.

I copied the %APPDATA%\vlc from backup and subtitles of ts files are now displayed by default again. Thank you very much.

I've found out the trick: if you set the prefered subtitles language to Japanese (ja) then these subtitles are automatically enabled.
Any other language or a blank setting and you have to manually enable them.

Hmm... But why does this problem happen only for ts files, not mkv files.

Maybe because MKV has flags for default and forced subtitles that TS has not.
