VLC media player 0.8.6-test2(a)

Postby The DJ » 17 Nov 2006 01:16

Dear VideoLAN users,

The VideoLAN team is one step closer to VLC media player 0.8.6 by presenting to you 0.8.6-test2. The 0.8.6 version will be mostly a culmination of bugfixes and some new supported video/audio/file formats. It is an intermediate release that we decided to create because the next version of VLC media player (0.9.0), is turning out to be quite a big one that's taking longer then expected.

Quick Download link: http://downloads.videolan.org/pub/video ... 8.6-test2/

Highlights of the new features and improvements:
* Support for Windows Media Video 9
* Support for VP5/VP6 video
* Support for TTA and Wavpack Lossless audio
* Improved H264 support
* Preliminary DVR-ms, MXF support
* Apple Remote support

Fixes since 0.8.6-test1
* more unicode fixes
* SAP announce fixes
* activex/mozilla plugin fixes
* Timed Text wiping supported
* More Flash video fixes
* mpeg2 field picture fixes
* Fullscreen panel for MacOSX

You can get a complete list by reading the release notes:
http://trac.videolan.org/vlc/browser/br ... 0.8.6/NEWS

Known Issues with 0.8.6-test2:
* hotkeys are not working in windows
* windows media audio might crash vlc windows

Binary packages for Windows and MacOS X (ppc & x86) and the source code are available. You
can download these from:
http://downloads.videolan.org/pub/video ... 8.6-test2/

Remember that this is a beta version. Please test it heavily and report
bugs. Known bugs are registered in the trac database:
http://trac.videolan.org/vlc/roadmap
If you register you can also file your own bugs.

For the VideoLAN team,
Derk-Jan Hartman

Are you aware that the full-screen controls on OS X are somewhat broken.

They seem to be unreliable in appearing for the first time. The controls also fade out even while the cursor is over the controls and while the controls are being dragged around.

Also, the intially appeared randomly on the left side of the screen - would be neater if they were centered at the bottom...

Nice feature, just needs a few minor fixes!

i really cant be stuffed logging this in the bug thing... it's too much of a hassle...

problem: in skins2 mode under Win XP, when attempting to close VLC whilst playing a file, VLC will not properly quit. It has to be stopped from the task manager...

this happens with 0.8.6-test1 and now with 0.8.6-test2(a)

Unable to reproduce. Works just fine here. Your stream must be special. Please provide a sampel ftp://streams.videolan.org/incoming

How to get to the audio access unit in mp4a (aac) streaming?

Postby Zhiheng Mao » 24 Apr 2007 01:37

Hi,

In my VLC Media Player's streaming setup window, I set the audio codec to be mp4a (aac) and the transport to be MPEG-2 TS over UDP. I am now able to receive the audio streaming and save the original data to a file. I then run faad decoder on the saved data and I am able to decode this MPEG-4 aac file. My question is:
During streaming and receiving, how can my receiver parse the TS data? I know it is an MPEG-4 AAC audio, but how can I crack the container open to access the raw AAC elementary stream (the access units)? What is the format of the TS stream data? Or is the TS stream data already the raw AAC elementary stream with no container? Is there any document on that?

Thank you!

MPEG TS is a container. If you want the raw data (formats) inside you will need to strip the container and remux the formats.

Please notice that this thread has now been superseded with VLC 0.8.6b Test 1

How to get to the audio access unit in mp4a (aac) streaming?

Postby Zhiheng Mao » 24 Apr 2007 02:52

Hi,

Thanks for the response. I have already stripped the MPEG-2 TS and the PES headers. Now I am holding the PES pkts payload. Btw, I am having only one stream, which is the mp4a from the VLC Media Player. No mux is involved.
Now I am not sure if this is already the raw AAC access units or I still need crack some other headers in order to get to the raw AAC access units?

Thank you very much!

In my opinion MP4a or AAC shouldn't be put in a MPEG TS container so I have no idea as to how it will strip out using current utilities. But assuming it does, you may need to rename the file something.mp4 and something.aac to know what the original form was before muxing.

Ya! I realize that MP4a and H.264 was ratified as the blue-ray choice and that broadcasters are experimenting with this in a MPEG TS container, but there continues to be problems with channel mapping AAC in 5.1 and the gain compensation is also screwed up for most decoders. So ac3 continues to be a more logical choice with fewer discrepancies. It's a pity that all of this is well documented and that no one seems to be working on it or resolving it.

I am having the same problem.
I tried to download a codec peck from the net and it didn't help.
I know this topic is old .... but maybe someone is still reading.
Is it possible that one codec will clash with another one ?
