VLC doesn't work in Windows Vista: screen is black or with a unique color during playback with every type of videos.
Why? Any plans to release a Vista compatible version?
With Windows Media Player 11 everything works fine.

Currently VLC team is working on making the VLC media player more compatible with Windows Vista. Maybe you could try one of the nightly builds or report what problem you’re having here: viewtopic.php?t=31687.

But for now, you can go to the video tab in the preferences menu and try some different video output modules. Hope this helps some.

with DirectX and it's black
with DirectX without overlay and the Aero is disabled
with OpenGL and the video is corrupted i.e. half of screen is black/cutted and it's very slow!

yes, I'm using the latest NVidia drivers 97.46 final (7.15.10.9746 - NVIDIA GeForce 6200 (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM))

100.57 or 59 are beta.
And anyway it's a VLC bug and not an Nvidia bug. In fact Windows Media Player 11 works fine

Same problem, tying to play XVID video in Windows Vista with VLC. Latest drivers, with an ATI video card.

Initially, I had no XVID codec (as Vista doesn't come with one) so VLC just didn't play the video stream (the window stayed very small and all I got was audio).

I visited XVID's website, got Koepi's latest Windows binary, and tried again. It works in WMP, but VLC just shows an all-white screen.

Any ideas?

vesion 0.8.5 works for me in ultimate - Xvid and DVD's

Following system:

Windows Vista 32-bit, Enterprise Edition
Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 (3Ghz)
Radeon X1900 GT, latest ATI drivers for 32-bit Vista

... initially had this problem, as per my post above. By going to Settings > Preferences and then changing to the OpenGL output module in the Videos section, I was able to get perfect playback. DirectX 3D playback provides an all-white screen.

I have:

Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit - Storebought retail

And i get blackscreen when i use all output modes.
Opengl/direct-x etc.
I also tried the as of yesterday latest trunk release vlc-0.9.0-svn-20070209-0001-win32 when i couldnt get it to work.
Same result, the differencce is that in the trunk release i cannot change output mode as there is only one option.

I get blackscreen nomatter if i play .vob files or .avi etc.
oh one difference with the vlc-0.9.0-svn-20070209-0001-win32 release is that i get a color flickering in the vlc window.
While the release version is totally black.

edit: i also have the latest ati drivers from the ati page, dated Jan. 29, 2007.

Iam using Vista RC2 Vlc ver0.8.6 running on onboard video (GMA950),i too used to get the black screen fiddled around works very good in opengl mode.

I'm using:
-Vista Home Premium 32bit
-Nvidia Go7900gs (Driver: Forceware 100.59)

And I got everything to work fine! The fix:

Switch to OpenGL mode.

Go to Settings>Preferences>Click the Advanced Options Check Box>Video>Output Modules>Then choose OpenGL video output in the dropdown box

and that's it!

After i installed i rebooted, the problem persisted.
however now if i choose openGL, i will get a screen.
The screen however runs at maybe 2-3 fps maximum.

So i tried direct-x, direct-x 3d, ascii art (lol wtf).
None of which solved my problems so i finally tried:

Windows GDI Video output , something i didnt see last time i had 0.8.6a installed.
Now i watch movies again with VLC, but somehow it feels like the movies are slightly more pixelated. dunno why but just a feeling i get.
it is like i can sometimes almost see vertical lines that get slightly more pixelated at times.

yeah i think ati is having problems with their OpenGL support in Vista. i guess you're screwed until ati or vlc fixes their --please stay polite--.

This worked for me, notice that you have to click the advanced options box

I just downloaded VLC latest. Installed on Vista Premium.
Works right away including subtitles.

I have Vista Business edition and no DVD decorder. I downloaded the VLC 0.86 a but it didn't work. Black screen for all video files. I uninstalled VLC 0.86a and installed VLC 0.85 and all of a sudden, everything works. I can watch DVD-Video or any other video files with the player. It does switch off the Windows Aero when VLC 0.85 is launched. When VLC 0.85 quits, it automatically turns on Windows Aero again. So it is OK for me.

So clearly there is something broken with the 0.86 release. Hope this will be fixed in the 0.9 release.

There was much discussion about nVidia drivers in the City of Heroes boards. The 100.59 drivers are release drivers, but it's hard to find if you try looking for them based on a 5, 6, or 7 series card. If you search as an 8800 series card, you'll find the newer drivers. Release notes confirm they're designed for the older cards as well, not just the 8800 series.

I have the 100.59 drivers installed with 32-bit Home Premium, and using OpenGL or Windows GDI, VLC 0.8.6a seems to run fine. Even Aero stays on. Mostly tested with GDI. Haven't found a video in my collection yet that hasn't worked as well as it did in XP.

So my hint and above writer is to use 0.8.5
