VLC Player quit working

Postby JoeZ » 30 Nov 2006 17:59

I had been using VLC player for several weeks now with no problems, mostly to allow my young daughter to watch her cartoons from copies of the CD's to .avi files as she handles CD's roughly.
She watches the same cartoons often, and I occasionally use the player to watch videos as well. I tried to view a video yesterday and it would not play so I assumed it required a CODEC that I didn't have and forgot about it. Later my daughter wanted to watch her cartoons and I found none of them would play either. I'm running Windows XP-Pro, and found her cartoons would play using windows Media player, so I figured something had happened to VLC player and I removed and re-installed it. It still would not work, so once again I removed it and downloaded a new copy to be sure I had the latest and it was a good copy. Still no luck. I checked the forum for help and tried executing the command "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --reset-config --reset-plugins-cache --save-config vlc:quit
Still no luck. Does anyone have an answer as to how to get VLC to work again? If it helps, when I exit VLC a blank video window displays for about a second. I really enjoy using this player so I would be very greatful if someone could help me to get it working once again. Thank you.[/i]

edit:
Just out of curiosity, I tried to play an .mp3 file and found that no longer works either.

If you have a 29+ days uptime: Known bug will be fixed when 0.8.6 releases. (the final page of this thread explains it)
Otherwise I don't know.

Try erasing the preferences directory. C:\Documents and Settings\Owner (this is you)\Application Data\VLC Erase VLC, Application Data is a hidden directory so you will need to make it visible.

29 days uptime

Saribro: Do you mean 29 days without a reboot? The computer I'm using VLC on stays on 24/7 and has been on for months now. Are you saying a reboot might clear the problem?

DJ: I tried erasing the vlc folder, and a new one was created when I started VLC player, but trying to play just an .mp3 file did not work, and it just sits there doing nothing.

The 29 day issue has been addressed recently and a fix has been applied. If you want to try it, down load a new version of VLC 0.8.6 test 2

DJ: Well, I got it down quicker than I thought, and I removed the earlier version and installed the version you recommended and I'm working again.
Thanks you for you prompt and kind help, my daughter will be pleased that she can once again watch her cartoons.
