Advantage of VOD?

Hello,

I want to stream Videos over a Network. In VLC I can setup VOD Mpeg Streams on different Ports.. So I access them remotely over a webpage with the VLC plugin on Port 1234 (Lord of the Rings), on Port 1235 (Chocolate Factory)...
What is the different, if I just create a shared folder on a remote Server, and let the videos play from the Client? (Example http://10.0.0.1/chocolatefact.mpeg)

Nothing.
Personally i always prefer nfs share mounting instead of VoD. Much simpler.

UDP vs TCP connection.

If you're on a private network with plenty of available bandwith, you're probably fine. Over a large or congested network...TCP might not be such a good choice.

If the video is live, UDP is better.

He was talking about a "closed" network, and so was I.

In the Internet situation, we have a whole other deal of course.

Even so, on my little home network if I share the file an try to play it via the share sometimes the bandwith over my ...wireless... connection just can't keep up with the player needs. If I stream it, the player is much less sensitive.
