VLC activeX just to compile on XP

Postby digizar » 11 Oct 2006 20:54

Buddies,
we are trying to compile the activeX part of the vlan-0-8-5 source code.
On Native Windows-XP with the Microsoft Visual Studio .NET -V7.
The activeX part is needed only, not the complete vlc frame.

That application obvious looks like an active-X,
but it contains 'just' DLL-info.
Which ist not of an important issue now.

The question is:
What PROJECT TYPE is required to create,
to setup, compile, (debug?), and modify/maintain this application.

The code inside the sources looks like ordinary c++ -code.
With one particular specalty: they do not contain a destructor (~name).

No, we do not cross compile on another platform.
Though we managed to compile on SuSE-Linux-9.3

Any hint, any advice, any helpful comment ist very much appreciated.

Personal background - so there is not a real explanation for dummies required :) :
I am in IT-Business since 1962 -with the big IBMs-
(and I am 67 now, still in business better than ever),
I have 12 years experience of MS-V-Studio,
I have a few handful of years experience in Línux.
And I have lots of years of experience in microcontrollers.
See the attected personal home page.

Thanks you in advance - digi

Well, the activex code is mostly useless without the framework, as it is mostly a frontend, most of the work is done by the framework, as you name it.

the VLC activex code was never written under/for Microsoft Visual Studio, so I expect that you will need a lot (yes, I really mean it) of effort to compile it in a VC project, don't forget that you also need to compile all of the other modules as well (what you describe as the framework), including all the support libraries such as FFMPEG, etc... there has been attempts to maintain a VLC project tree in the past, but whatever you will see in the repository is out of date. Most of the developers do not use VC, mostly due to the fact that you cannot write open-source software with it (due to copyright infringments). If you search inside the forum, you will see that some people have attempted to compile VLC under VC, with some success.

VLC can be built on Windows using cygwin or mingw, this usually what the windows developers use (including me), as it is very close to a cross compilation environment

Hi Quovadis with an 'o' :)

You know - Cork is nice, but your answer is much better *.
And even if one accounts for the Guinness draught.
Both put some light in the misty world. THANK YOU!
Well, the activex code is mostly useless without the framework, as it is mostly a frontend, most of the work is done by the framework, as you name it. Quote:
Exactly as I personally expected,
as we definitively have to use just the active portion -
no gui, no parametering, no framework - completely 'embedded';
just keep it streaming > to an output file.
Anyway, I guess it is more than expected to be done _g_.
If you search inside the forum, you will see that some people have attempted to compile VLC under VC, with some success.
Is it very unpolite if I tell you the truth, that i HATE M$ ?
They caused me soooo many headaches.
But, I have to admit, that VStudio is a bummer.
Other people can hardly do such monster. But they did it - even better.

Back to the roots:
I am trying several approaches how to compile the complete set of VLS ....
...so I expect that you will need a lot (yes, I really mean it) of effort to compile it in a VC project,...
Well, I figured that at a very early stage
Therefore, VStudio did not make it so far.
VLC can be built on Windows using cygwin or mingw *, this usually what the windows developers use (including me), as it is very close to a cross compilation environment.
* that, exactly, was the trigger for me to be happy :D
I tend to use the MinIDE, but -as usual- could not get it to compile - yet.
Always interesting how many traps can be built in such small pieces. _g_

Keep you informed -
the forum will very likely see the result.

digi - momentarily from Netherlands (Nijmegen).

And a nice gift for you, enjoy:
