HORRIBLY choppy playback

I'm running VLC 0.8.5 on winxp pro on a 1.86ghz pentium M with 1gb ram, 5 month old laptop.

I've tried updating audio drivers, I've tried surface scandisks, I've tried resetting vlc's settings, but still vlc gets extremely choppy (video and audio both) whenever the pc is a tad busy (it can happen if I just open firefox, for example). It's gotten to the point where I can't even watch video anymore!

Now, I had been thinking that this must be the pc's fault and had been heavily troubleshooting for a while now. When this is occuring, the mouse is also sluggish, as is the pc's response to, well, anything. When it's happening, the cpu usage is maxed out (even if I've closed everything else) and the usage is split between VLC, "System" and "Explorer". Now I've tried WMP though, and no choppiness even when I'm totally maxing out pc usage!

note that I've tried different files run off of different partitions (only one hdd in the laptop) and off of burnt dvd's (as files, not in the dvd-video format) and it makes no difference. I've tried manually closing other apps and the only trigger I could discern was increased activity, IE a file copy or something.

What format is the file? does it go something like this

media file any

Videeo codec x264 and AAC

does the sound come in crystal clear?


If it is a x264 or aac you need to reformat the video file.

As I said, the audio AND video are choppy and it happens with all files of all kinds.

sounds like the video and audio bitrate is too high for your computer.

Press ctrl+w

go to transcode/save file

use exactly what the file codecs are.

click on bitrate and reduce to about 128 Video and lower than 100 on audio.

see if that helps.
