There is no adequate way to describe every situation. Much of this depends on the source file, the transcode method and the method for streaming, the quality you want or expect and the bandwidth you have or want to give up. This is why there are options. But it is up to you as to learning what options are relevant in any given situation.

I am sorry. I am not craftsman to make a furniture but I am a common man to assemble the furniture that craftsman made. It doesn`t matter how nice is the furniture and form of the furniture and big is the furniture. What I want as of now is that, I have a furniture in my living room. I will do it later how to improve it. thank you. If you don`t know I don`t force you to get answer may be somebody will.

It's not a matter of not knowing. It's a matter of finding the time to write the book. For you it would be a matter of reading the book and understanding it, then applying it. There is no easy 1 page 1000 words or less answer here.

what is the use of this forum if you expect all the people to read a book with a 1000 pages and understand it and to apply it. I don`t think so that you know the purpose of this forum. As I have said If you don`t have the answer. Just say it.

The purpose is for asking questions related to VLC and problems. It is not intended to be a on going teaching experience for the user. All though it sometimes becomes that. The Devs are trying to discourage this in favor of FAQs and help sections.

If there are specific questions after getting started that you are unable to understand or resolve, this is the place to ask the question, but was not intended to be a how to tutorial in of itself.

that is precisely what I am saying. there is nothing that is functioning http multi and unicast in my set up. that is why I give you my setup, the format of my source file for streaming and my IP adress and I ask, if you need more information about my setup you are free to ask. In my other computer as client recieve no picture not even black picture , no sounds nothing. that is why I ask a specific steps base on my setup. I didn`t ask for the quality of picture or sounds because there is nothing happens. I think you didn`t understand different between a tutorial and (discussion and support). If you don`t know how to act as a moderator there a tons of information about moderatoring. http://training-classes.com/course_hier ... rator.html

As I have said if you don`t know, then just relax.

It is always smart to separate transcoding from streaming by making a local file and check that the file plays locally when you are having problems streaming. Further if you monitor the transcode in Messages you should be able to see any problem areas. If there are problems with the original file there will be problems with the transcode. Ideally messages should be quiet, both for the original file and for the transcoded file.

Transcoding is required for streaming!

Looks like this is going to be a very long post! :P

BTW I looked at your link. This is exactly what we are trying not to do here. These forums were established so that people could ask questions, make suggestions etc. regarding VLC. Not as formal training classes. Nor are we trying to draw people out into group therapy! :P

Just want to give my 2 cents as well. I have been curious about streaming videos using VLC and have spent some time reading it. I have to say that for newbies like myself, it is absolutely daunting trying to read all that technical stuff. I know you can just say to me, that it is a free software, if I like it then fine, if I don't, I should just piss off. Fair enough.

But I don't see why can't we have some basic training tutorials to how to get this stuff working. All this streaming stuff is amazing, and the internet world is really opening up to the concept of high quality streams, yet if only we didn't have to read a book on the technical stuff to get started.

Getting started is the toughest part. What I have been trying to do is a very simple thing of trying to stream a dvd, or divx file or a channel being captured thru my capture card and I want this streamed over the internet to my uncle's place who lives 2 floors below.

I have not found 1 basic training tutorial on this. I read the documentation on the vlc website, and then the wiki - both of which in my opinion are too technical and familiar with each other and nothing for noobs that is written in laments terms, providing definitions for technical terms such as transcoding, udp, unicast, whatever whatever. Or a simple step by step procedure. Of course, with more time and effort spent, I could start to gather information slowly by googling everything and reading bit by bit, but I wonder how long will my patience last, and how fast will I be too overwhelmed with the information, that I may just give up. There is so much that this software can do, and for a noob to pin point the exact steps as to what he needs to know and how to move forth - that is an unneccessary challenge.

I would create a noob manual if I knew the ins and outs of this great software, but unfortunatly I don't. I was saddened to see that someone asking for simple steps above has been asked to go away and read stuff and figure it out on his own. Sure you don't want the forum to become a noob training ground - So perhaps create a separate section for noobs who just want some basic help in getting started and where people who don't mind helping noobs could lurk. If there is a place like this already, please do foward me the address. Remember noobs do help alot in spreading the word of something this is truly great. Thank you.

Please note, this is not a flame. This is a kind and polite message to the moderator or owner.

Thanks for your polite tone. :)

Well, I should answer:

1/ There is a wiki where you can put some examples, and they'll improve themselves with time. The documentation should move there one day.
2/ There are few developpers behind VLC project, and reading the forum, the mails, answering on IRC, administrating the machines, solving the many bugs, caring about legal stuff and writing a good documentation takes so much time...
3/ Feel free to write some, i'll put it where it should.

Ok, I'm about to throw my twopence worth in because I felt annoyed that this post originator had not been treated very well

I'm close to completing a degree in computing, have a real interest in streaming, have bought, read most of the specialist streaming book titles and have spent the last 8 hours trying to get this up and running (streaming) but with little luck. I sucessfully stream with Windows Media Encoder and Windows Server 2003 because there is so much material / tutorials on it but not VideoLAN

I came across this post doing a search on the forum for 'tutorials' and felt I had to add my bit

We newbies accept that the developers have important contributions towards developing the code / application but unless us mere mortals can start to use it, no-one else will, so a simple request might be for someone to please put some tutorials on the web site for at least 2 or 3 different scenerios (eg, streaming from file, dvd, cam)

I too am a novice, and have no interest in getting into the nutts and bolts of all this technical jargon (Very confusing stuff) however, all I want to do is send my Hauppauge TV signal from one laptop via wireless router to the other (Nothing fancy, it doesn't have to be prefectly clear, just viewable) So after 8 painful hours of reading and re-reading and reading somemore and pounding on my PC I finally got the sucker to work and it works well.
Now after spending another 2 hours researching for my next simple solution I am submittng your assistance to my question.
How do I save the settings in VLC? I have to set it back up from scratch every time I use it. Is there a way that whenever I open the program up I don't have to reset everything all over again (EVERYTIME?)
Yea, I know this is a no brainer, but at this point in time I don't have one, so can I borrow yours? All I want to do is save the settings, THAT'S IT!

Yes, there's a way. Two ways, actually:

1) build a batch file that invokes VLC the way you want using command line options

2) create a file with the streaming commands (I cut and paste from the http vlm page), then type the name of the file (with path) as the VLM Configuration File under Preferences/Stream Output.

HUH? Again, NOVICE Here....

1) build a batch file (what's a "Batch file?and how do you "Build one.) that invokes VLC the way you want using command line options (Command line options???)

2) create a file with the streaming commands (Create what kinda file? TXT? DOC?, ????, what goes in it?)(I cut and paste from the http vlm page), then type the name of the file (with path) as the VLM Configuration File under Preferences/Stream Output (kinda understand this one, KINDA?).

Thanks but if your going to give me some suggestions please provide step by step procedures because I'm still scratching my head. I get the general idea, just don't know the procedures to accomplish this.

1) build a batch file (what's a "Batch file?and how do you "Build one.) that invokes VLC the way you want using command line options (Command line options???)
batch files are text files (that end in .bat) and contain commands to the operating system. Those commands typically have options associated with them (hence, the term "command line options"). Most of the help files for VLC describe what you would type at a command line to start VLC for one purpose or another. I don't recommend this approach for you.
It's not important what the extension of the file is. If you go to the http vlm page as I suggested, you would have the VLC directives for your configuration and could cut and paste them to your file. To get the http vlm page, you'll have to read the wiki (because I don't remember the exact keystrokes) for a step by step. Essentially, you'll need to turn on the http interface, then go to http://127.0.0.1:8080/vlm.html (you may need to change 127.0.0.1 to your computer's ip addrress). There's an options page (or extras or something like that) you can get to from the menu strip on that page which will show you exactly what to put into your file for your current setup. Cut and paste it.

Thanks but if your going to give me some suggestions please provide step by step procedures because I'm still scratching my head.
or, you could ask nicely for more detail on the parts you don't get.

You can make a playlist and call it anything.m3u

It will take this form:

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:0,22 - SETUP - 22
#EXTVLCOPT:dshow-vdev=
#EXTVLCOPT:dshow-adev=
#EXTVLCOPT:dshow-size=
#EXTVLCOPT:dshow-caching=300
#EXTVLCOPT:dshow-chroma=
#EXTVLCOPT:dshow-fps=
#EXTVLCOPT:no-dshow-config
#EXTVLCOPT:no-dshow-tuner
#EXTVLCOPT:dshow-tuner-channel=
#EXTVLCOPT:dshow-tuner-country=
#EXTVLCOPT:dshow-tuner-input=
#EXTVLCOPT:sout=#transcode {vcodec=,vb=,scale=1,acodec=,ab=,channels=2}:duplicate{dst=std{access=,mux=,url=192.168.1.101}}
dshow://

Please note: The line starting with :stout=#transcode needs to be all on one line. If you do not need streaming or want transcoding or want nothing the line may be modified or deleted to suit your taste. This is a blank example and you will need to fill in the info for your device.

You can make a m3u playlist and then switch channel with N and P.

The m3u playlist looks like this when opened in notepad:

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:-1,Viasat Explorer
#EXTVLCOPT:dshow-tuner-channel=1
dshow://
#EXTINF:-1,SVT 1
#EXTVLCOPT:dshow-tuner-channel=4
dshow://
#EXTINF:-1,Kanal 5
#EXTVLCOPT:dshow-tuner-channel=20
dshow://
#EXTINF:-1,SVT 2
#EXTVLCOPT:dshow-tuner-channel=21
dshow://
#EXTINF:-1,TV 4
#EXTVLCOPT:dshow-tuner-channel=23
dshow://
#EXTINF:-1,TV 3
#EXTVLCOPT:dshow-tuner-channel=25
dshow://
#EXTINF:-1,BBC Prime
#EXTVLCOPT:dshow-tuner-channel=26
dshow://
#EXTINF:-1,Eurosport
#EXTVLCOPT:dshow-tuner-channel=28
dshow://
