VLC CPU usage fluctuates

Hi my VLC CPU usage fluctuates between low and high, how do i sort out this problem?

This depends more on the video type and resolution than on VLC.

even with a fairly hi spec pc?

Yup! But if you want to test, use a commercial DVD and note CPU usage before and during play. VLC should have no appreciable CPU usage. This is all done by your video card. If there is say 20 to 25% CPU usage you have problems with drivers (AGP or PCIe) or your video card is VERY OLD.
