I'm not sure I understand the logic of your question.
  1. Yes, VLC and WMV3 are not the best of chums
  2. What good is a "Mac codec" to Windows Media Player?
  3. Windows Media Player can play WMV3
  4. Windows Media Player can also play AVI's provided it can find the codecs for the elemental streams (and those codecs can be anything).

I feel so lucky,
first I'm glad to Quickly find here, that VLC won't play the .wmv movie a PC videographer friend sent me.

I have all these exact versions installed...

- qt player latest version 7.0.4 (req. os x 10.3.9)
- flip4mac latest version 2.0.2.10
- vlc player (as a diagnostic tool)

*(Did update Quicktime from 7.0.1 to 7.1.1, but it broke just one Toast function, the ability to burn Apple lossless files to CD, all my music is Apple Lossless, so I downgraded to 7.0.4 (a nightmare with no downgrader out then). Auto software update keeps pushing 7.1.1.
Lots of other bugs in the latest QT 7.1.1 created in other 3rd party sw. See Apple QT support forum.)

Without changing anything the .WMV3 played perfectly.
(Noticed QT icon, in the dock, opened when I right clicked on the WMV3 file, choosing "open with" WMV player(default). The right click serves a great function for Macs:)
Must have set up the WMV player, (green ball icon), for a previous WMV3 file.

I have mac os x 10.3.9 on a G4 tower.

i received some video off a friend from his mobile he converted to wmv3. It contained alot of symbals in the file name as mac os reduced it down i.e. headon&camp&turnout didn't play in both vlc or WMP9 for mac, I took out the &'s changed file extension to asf, then back to wmv and it worked fine. this worked on all four files he sent me.
