Windows Vista is not supported at the moment. We will start to do that in early 2006, once M$ provides more stable beta versions.

Have a look at this ticket in our tracker for details.

if you still want to start VLC, be sure to delete preferences and cache before starting and NEVER save the prefs (this will cause VLC to quit). Basically, all options have to be specified command line.

Please check the Beta2 Vista build when available.

VLC needs to be updated to stop locking the primary video buffer - this causes compatibility issue on Vista.

We've had reports that VLC works fine on Beta2.

Yes if you are using Windows Classic theme.

However if you instead are using the Aero Glass which most people will do, then the Aero Glass have to be deactived before the start of VLC. However windows do this automatically and all transparent effects are gone while VLC are running. But each time VLC starts my screens get black for 1 second (while Aero glass is unloaded). Same thing happens when you close VLC and Aero Glass is loading.

You will also get a warning that says "Some visual elements have been temporarily disabled. The reason this is happening is that the following program is not compatible with Windows Vista" when you start VLC.

I have tried this both with 2 computers and the same thing happens on both. One of the is a laptop using ATI 9700Pro graphics card and the other computer is using Nvidia 7800GT.

I hope that my information is helping and I really hope that this will be fixed in the near future. I really want to use the best media player ever released for windows :)

Change Video output module to Windows GDI.

I am quite certain that it same with VLC.

I have noticed that this Aero theme disabling happens as soon as you connect the "Overlay Mixer" or "Overlay Mixer 2" to the output of a video decoder.
You can easily reproduce this with GraphEdit.

Hi im using Vista RC1 right now and whenever i open a video file in VLC the Aero Composition Manager goes crazy. The system kinda goes blank for a few seconds and it downgrades the interface to the basic theme. It only happens with the DirectX output module. I would use the GDI or Opengl modules but GDI isnt hardware accelerated in Vista and Opengl isnt supported that well in the vista nvidia drivers like it is in XP. Basically it runs too slow for me.

Apparently VLC isnt the only application experiencing this problem and it isnt a vista bug either... http://www.virtualdub.org/blog/pivot/entry.php?id=105

If you guys need me to test any future build on Vista then id be happy to. :)

Could you try a nightly build from http://nightlies.videolan.org ? Those are unstable but they have the new direct3d video output which might help you a bit. Please tell us if it works better.

FYI, DirectX turns off Aero and OpenGL / GDI doesn't work between multiple monitors. Also, GDI is horrible in the performance department.

Tried the nightly build...

vlc-0.8.6-svn-20060913-0000-win32

Played audio and video smoothly and Glass remained. However, was a very dark image (nearly black) and when I would try to add the extended GUI to adjust the image, VLC would crash the playback and I couldn't recover w/out restarting VLC.

I added the video filter and set brightness to 1.2. Then it seemed to be just black and white.

Running NVIDIA card w/ latest driver.

Basically what's happening is since VLC writes directly to the screen via Direct Draw, the Desktop Window Manager (DWM) shuts off, since it cannot be properly emulated. The DWM works by rendering the windows in its own special way to achieve the "glass" effect, and this is bypassed by apps writing directly to the screen.

More specifically (I think), glass is disabled only when the DirectDraw primary is locked, so if VLC can avoid locking this surface, glass just might stay enabled.
