multiple channel, live tv

Postby prozac » 05 Jun 2006 12:44

is it possible to make an arrangement such that each client can view any channel they want? can i broadcast multiple (over 20) tv channels over my LAN such that everybody has the freedom to switch channels and watch what they would like? streaming one channel of live tv is possible, can i use the same hardware configuration to stream more than one tv channels? does vlc support this kind of streaming?

for example, say a webpage with list of channels that local user can access using their browser. the users can select any one of those channels and play using the integrated vlc or media player without affecting other users watching a different channel on their pc.
You keep using that word. I don't think it means what you think it means.

you'd have to multicast each channel, and just have the hardware capable of supporting that many streams

you'll have to experiment to find out how many instances of VLC you can run at once

does this means i will need seperate dvb | capture card for each channel i want to multicast? or i can just use one capture card, feed the live tv broadcast to it and use vlc to tune into channels.

can't a single instance of vlc multiplex the channel data? the way i understand from your above reply, i will need to run 20 vlc instances if i ever wanted to broadcast 20 diff. channels. it will be highly unmanageable i guess.

if one dvb/capture card can do the job then i guess this is the configuration i need. multiple vlc instances running in parallel. each tuned to its own frequency of the channel being casted. i think this is not right. if vlc provided a tabbed window then it could have been a little simple on the look. still i may try it if it does what i want done. so the final question is this feasible to implement in practical/production environment?
