Win98SE+VLC0.8.5+WMV=InstantCrash

Postby Simon1983 » 11 May 2006 03:28

Every time i try to play a WMV File VLC crashes instantly.
I get an error like this:
VLC verursachte einen Fehler durch eine ungültige Seite

Strangely the WMV plays, but without sound. 0.8.4 works fine without problems.

Other Fileformats doesn't seem to be affected. Hadn't any other problems.

Is this a kinda known Bug with a Workaround or solution? Like the new Version but sometimes you can't get a AVI, just a crappy WMV.

WMV is supported through Windows codecs and is one of the few exceptions for VLC under Windows only.

There are no known issues, assuming you have the Direct Show codecs installed.

Do the files play in WMP or MPC?

Plays with MPC, but not with WMP6.4.

It seems the movie uses WMV9 and i would have to install WMP7 or newer to install the codec. But i don't like the WMP7 or newer.

But why plays 0.8.4 without problems and 0.8.5 crashes?

I'm not sure, but I had a similar problem in Dec with WMP 10 and it was suggested by Microsoft to update WMP. I did and the problem went away. I have had no further issues with VLC either. I believe the codecs can be gained separately. Unfortunately on Microsoft's web site it is always a bit difficult to know the latest version of things.

Why do i have to get any codecs? VLC 0.8.4 runs the WMV fine, really fine. No problems at all. But if i uninstall 0.8.4 with deleting preferences and cache and install VLC 0.8.5 VLC crashes instantly when playing a WMV that run fine in 0.8.4.

That can't be related to a missing codec or not?

I think you are missing the point or didn't understand my post.

1. VLC supports WMV through Windows Direct Show codecs because of copyright restrictions and it does so for Windows only. Would you rather the Devs just ignore or remove it??

2. There is no way to hold things forever as they once were as APIs continue to change you must change with them or the system causes problems for the greater majority of people. Most people find that doing this, keeps improving the system, however you must also continue to be current for your operating system so everything works.

Ok, i installed WMP7.1 and the Windows Media Codec Pack from here

WMP7.1 plays the WMV, MPC plays the WMV, VLC 0.8.4 plays the WMV and VLC 0.8.5 still crashes.

I suppose there are a few possibilities :P

1. The codec pack you installed from Microsoft is not current. I'm not saying it is or isn't but this is an infamous problem with Microsoft.

2. If you haven't done this you should, but I wound suspect there is more than WMV files that don't work.

http://www.microsoft.com.nsatc.net/glob ... ounce.mspx

Windows 95 - Me Unicode support. The files belong in your System32 folder.

Installed MSLU long ago. eMule needed it and i installed it.

Installed it into the System32 folder again. No change.

Downloaded VLC 0.8.5 again trough an extern Downloadmanager (Flashget) not Firefox internal Download Manager. No change.

And about the codecs. Do you have a link to a uptodate WMV/WMA Codec Pack? I think it IS uptodate, because there are WMV9 codecs in it.

If not, WMP7.1 would complain about a missing codec when trying to play this WMV.

I just don't understand why 0.8.5 crashes, when Windows Media Player 7.1, Media Player Classic 6.4.9.0 and VLC 0.8.4 are playing one and the same WMV without any problems.

It is just VLC 0.8.5 who gets freaky and crashes.

Actually there was (I believe) only 1 set of API changes between 0.8.4 and 0.8.5, this shouldn't be creating a problem or causing a crash. None of the developers own a 9x - Me machine. In order to write a trouble report one of the moderators or developers must be able to confirm the problem. You already have one person here running 98 SE that says it works. Considering there are no know issues in this regard, unfortunately it is going to remain a mystery. If one can't duplicate the problem it is very difficult to fix the problem.

I can't get (atleast) some wmv files to work right, video plays but no sound, you can't pause or anything and the program crashes. Same thing with both 0.8.4 and 0.8.5. And I have XP pro.

And I have the latest wmp and all associating codecs installed.

It can't be a codec problem, otherwise 0.8.4 would crash too, or at least complain that this file can't be played.

But 0.8.4 works without any problem. That's what i don't get, 0.8.4 works and 0.8.5 crashes.

It has to have something to do with the settings, 'cause I can't get 'em to work even with 0.8.4.

Did you try to reset the settings?

Did you try to reset the settings?
Yes, multiple times, even an absolute clean install with deleting registry settings, VLC Folder and the preferences and cache folder in
C:\WINDOWS\Anwendungsdaten\vlc\

No change, VLC0.8.4 runs fine and VLC0.8.5 crashes. Too bad that no developer seems to react to this thread.

I've the same problem with Windoes 2000 and VLC 0.8.5

With VLS 0.8.4 works fine.

Has anyone a idea?

Yes, I have similar video problem/crash with VLC 8.5 running on Windows Me

Their argument is that none of the developers uses our systems -- Windows 9x, Me, etc; and so they can't model the problem with VLC 8.5.

Even with the installation of the Windows 'unicode' files, the problem still persists.

However, I noticed that some people with these 'older' Windows operating system seem to have version 8.5 up an running.

But no one has posted what they had to do with Windows 9x, etc in order to get VLC 8.5 to work.
So I keep searching the forum like the NSA would.

By the way, if you do get 8.5 to work, please start a thread highlighting what you had to do to get the sucker to work.

Can those of you for whom it crashes give one or more specific .wmv files on the internet, so that we have something common to look at.

I am also using 0.8.5 on Windows 98 SE, so I can test.

Just click on the red DL Button to download the WMV.

Runs fine in:
WMP7.1
MPC
VLC0.8.4

Crashes in:
VLC0.8.5

Ivan, can you tell us what you did with your Windows 98 SE, if anything, to get the VLC 8.5 to work?

I have Windows ME and the sucker won't work with it.

The VLC 8.4 works fine; and audio on the 8.5 works well too; but video-audio is a 'crash'.

The video will play some, but there is an error indication at LIBVLC.DLL

What version WMV are you using?

I can verify that 0.8.5 crashes on win2k for me too on .wmv files. Others play okay, and 0.8.4 plays alright too. MPC works fine. I have WMP 6.4 installed with update codec packs installed.

In addition to this error message: "VLC has error at LIBVLC.DLL"

There is this message print out:

access_mms error: error while asking for file -1
access_mms error: error while asking for file -1
access_mms error: cannot connect to server
access_mms error: cannot read data
main warning: late picture skipped (27000)
main warning: late picture skipped (31000)

Incidentally I have the similar problem trying to change the 'skin'.

If anyone should get a fix, please post it here and in its own thread.!
