must I have the Windows Media Player installed to play wmv-files with the VLC ?

Yes for wmv3 video and some audio formats for which no open source decoder exists.

MPC is a Direct Show player and I don't believe Gabest built in support for WMV.

Reinstall Windows, and Windows media Player should come back.

A Miracle ... the Codec is back, I can play all files now ... I think, the PatchDay yesterday brought it back ...

No more Media Player except the VLC ... YEAH :D :D :D

Au contraire, mom ami: open source, maybe, but here's a couple of links that can provide all the codecs you need, or pass you on to more if needed:

http://www.free-codecs.com/Codec_Pack_A ... wnload.htm

http://www.codecguide.com/

Try them and see what you think. I have WMP9 on my system now, but haven't needed it to run .wmv in VLC since v8.0.4.

Cheers!
