VLC for Android does not show network location files

Postby SePetus » 23 May 2023 20:26

Hi!

I have Sony Google TV and Android phone, i used VLC to stream content from my pc through SMB connection, it worked fine over 2 years, and now, recently my TV stopped finding anything from network location that it used to find and stream content no problem, it just says "No media files found, please transfer some files to your device or adjust your preferences." I have unchecked prefer SMB 1 setting, no change. I have done clear media database and clear app data, i have also re-installed vlc but it just wont work, for some reason i also cant delete the network location so i could input it again, there is absolutely no where that i can find that would allow me to delete the network location and put it back in.

My phone kept working just fine even after my tv stopped reading the media files, but after i tried to rename my computer hostname in the hopes i could re-enter it as a new network smb connection, my phone stopped also reading the files and it has now the same problem as my tv.

Here is a log of my TV and my phone.

Any help would be much appreciated!

I have exact the same issue with my Samsung Galaxy s21 Ultra.

Luckily i didnt change names so it still work on my Sony Bravia TV and laptop i cam just browse to the local network folders with no issues.

Disadvantage i watch mostly via my smartphone, cant get it to work anymore..,

I can find the local PC folder thats hosting all video's but opening the folder ends up in exact same message metioned by the initial poster

I have the same problem with AppleTv. With the new version of May 2023, I can't see the folders in my PC. Before I could access the PC.

Finally i have found a solution to this problem, my best friend helped me to find solution, I fixed it by enabling SMB 1.0 / CIFS Client and Server from Windows features, and i restarted VLC and when I tried to open network location it finally asked username and password, it finally works.

CAUTION enable SMB1 on Windows on your own risk, as far i understand it is not very secure.

Please fix VLC so it works with SMB 3 and asks credentials when needed.

Worked once and then quit on 1 Firestick with 1 TV, no effect on my 2nd set up. I give up. Latest version of VLC for Firestick has bugs? Same problem for me with Kodi. Both used to work awhile ago. I cloned my HD, may be part of the problem? Emby and Plex still work w/Firestick but neither play DVD format, only mp4 and mkv rips, so you lose the launch menu, which sucks.

Has it been solved? I was able to connect my device with TotalCommander but not with VLC. It did never prompt for password. I can add the username by editing the folder (only after it had been added already) but never been asked for password.

I can open the files via TotalCommander though.

I have worked around the problem by installing Network Browser , which has no trouble seeing my network share. I can then use VLC to play the files. I think that proves that the problem is with VLC. It sucks , but it works. I guess they have other, more pressing issues to deal with

for me the very same problem:

1) KODI/Total Commander/Windows are able to use SMB 2/3, so can see files
2) no password is necessary (I disable it) but credentials can be used, if needed.
3) BUT, VLC is not able to see files and doesn't ask for credentials nor show files

the "solution" was to enable SMB 1 on Windows machine - but, dear VLC, this is not a solution!

From log, it is similar to others:
-> Unable to open file with path (null) (in share (null))

Please fix it ASAP! this bug persists for a very long time.

The nightly Android build fixes the LAN/SMB access issue, especially on Windows where SNB 1.0 has been disabled by default and SNB 2.0 or 3.0 need to be used. The current VLC Android build is over 15 months old, so when could we expect a newer version that addresses this SNB issue?

VLC state that the nightly builds are unstable, so shouldn't really be used.
