Displayed colors are slightly wrong

Postby Thane5 » 20 May 2024 20:18

Hi, i noticed that there are several cases where VLC does not display videos correctly.

One example is a "boring" h.264 sRGB video file that i rendered and exported with Blender. The file itself was fine, as i could re-import the file into a new instance of blender's video editing workspace. I can also render a single still frame and save it as a PNG to get the same colors.

Howewer in VLC (and a few other video players, but thats another story) the colors are slightly off. I just did a reinstall of the latest stable VLC with deleted cache and preferences, so i hope that no misconfigured settings are involved here.

You can find the video and reference PNG here: https://mega.nz/folder/JuhWyKrK#JNhSw7sDyMT-RhtcZP9rsQ

You can also try to enable or disable some video options such as Overlay and/or Hardware YUV -> RGB conversions.

The first fix that worked was to switch the renderer from "Automatic" to "DirectX(DirectDraw)". But why isn't this the default? I imagine many people might be seeing the wrong colors, and not even be aware of the issue.

What is your OS ? What is your VLC version ? What is your hardware, especially CPU and GPU.

You should create a new report ticket on the VLC issues tracker with your above report, the link to your sample file and the link to this thread:
https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc/-/issues

If possible, because of this:

How long does it take for new accounts to get approved? I signed up two days ago.

You can send an email to videolan (at) videolan.org about the Gitlab account issue.

Or join the IRC channel:

Ah, i can see why it isn't the default. Now, the colors look wrong when playing an export from Davinci Resolve. But with "Automatic", the Resolve export looks good again...

For context, i rendered a regular PNG sequence from Blender, and imported that into Davinci Resolve with with default color management settings.
I also added that exported video to my mega folder https://mega.nz/folder/JuhWyKrK#JNhSw7sDyMT-RhtcZP9rsQ
