VTT Colors and other effects are not rendered in VLC

Postby ruben1_PvP » 26 Mar 2024 00:35

I have a .vtt subtitle file file that has position changes, transitions, colors, that "syllable emphasis" effect and maybe more that I cannot remember right now.

However, the last two characteristics mentioned (colors and the effect) are not rendered by VLC, they appear like normal subtitles with the default color (white). VLC also has problems with transitions and some position changes, but as I don't have any other player that could display them properly (Media Player Classic doesn't move the subtitles and MPV just ignores any css mark in subtitles) I don't know if it's VLC's fault or the subtitles are not written correctly.

Is there any probability anybody could check this soon? If so, tell me if I need to re-upload the .vtt

It seems I can't edit my first message so I'll post the new link here.

Looks like VLC doesn't want to load your subtitles file for some reason. And same goes for MPV.

Code: Select all

vobsub debug: this doesn't seem to be a vobsub file subtitle debug: Movie fps: 25.000000 subtitle debug: detected UTF-16LE Byte Order Mark subtitle debug: autodetecting subtitle format subtitle warning: failed to recognize subtitle type

That's very strange, both my VLC and MPV can load the subtitles. The only problem is that they have trouble rendering all the effects, as I mentioned. Just to be sure, I uploaded the file itself instead of copying and pasting it in a pastebin website. Download this one and try it instead.

Ok this subtitle file is now loading but I couldn't see any error or warning message in the log. However, MPV returned this message:

Code: Select all

[ffmpeg] webvtt: The "sub_text_format" option is deprecated: Deprecated, does nothing

And since VLC is mainly built against FFmpeg I guess it should behave the same.

You should create a new report ticket on the VLC issues tracker with your above report, the link to your sample file and the link to this thread:
https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc/-/issues

If possible, because of this:

Alright, I'll do. What does the audio on Twitter videos thread have to do with mine though?

Edit: Ok now I know what you mean. I'm waiting if I get approved in the VLC Gitlab. It looks like they at least enabled the option to "apply", not like the comment you linked saying that in July 2023 the registrations were disabled. I will wait a couple of days to know if an administrator approves me or not. I'll post here if the Gitlab tracker accepts new members or not plus any more important update.

Almost one week later, I'm still with the "Your account is pending approval from your GitLab administrator and hence blocked. Please contact your GitLab administrator if you think this is an error. " error popping up everytime I want to log in with the account I made in that instance. I suppose they have indeed the option to create account opened but they don't check new accounts. Or I'm just unlucky, I don't know. They also have Gitlab.com and Github logging disabled ("Signing in using your GitHub account without a pre-existing GitLab account is not allowed. Create a GitLab account first, and then connect it to your GitHub account", "Signing in using your GitLab.com account without a pre-existing GitLab account is not allowed. Create a GitLab account first, and then connect it to your GitLab.com account.") so I suppose I can't contact them in Gitlab. I'll search by myself if I can contact them from other channels, but if not I suppose that's it.

If you don't contact admins, they'll just assume that you are a spammer and not approve your account.

That's true, I had to enter their IRC channel and ask them to accept me, which they did. I created the issue and I'm waiting for responses.

Well I guess that's it: https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc/-/issues/28630. I tried doing what François told me with a W3C parser but I get hundreds of the same errors that I don't understand (first "No blank line after the signature", and when I add one "Cue identifier needs to be followed by timestamp" for every single line of the .vtt) so I guess that the .vtt is malformed, that's just it.
