New update has glitched the toolbar?

Postby mnbvcxzl » 12 Oct 2023 18:36

I applied the new 3.0.19 update and in full screen mode certain buttons pressed twice cause the toolbar to disappear.

Buttons like AB repeat and skip forward/backwards are the ones I've already found have this issue.

I haven't tested all the buttons so im not sure of all the buttons affected.

It doesnt affect all buttons as frame by frame button works fine.

One good thing is that this issue doesnt happen when not in fullscreen mode so that is one workaround for now at least, although for me its too annoying so i have simply downloaded the previous 3.0.18 version anyway.

The issue happens on both my pc's, one runs windows 11 and the other windows 10.

On my Windows 11 pc i used automatic setting for video module and then switched through multiple different video modules and the issue kept happening.

I'm already back on 3.0.18 on Windows 10 pc so didnt test if video module changing made any difference on that pc.

I second this. Since the last update the toolbar has become less convenient.
It disappears and I'm left clicking in the air.
Before it wouldn't disappear while I had the mouse pointer on it.

I've the same behavior as mnbvcxzl on a Windows 10 Pro (22H2).
Immediately went back to 3.0.18 without checking other options.
Installed again 3.0.19
Tried Video output modules "Direct3d11", "Direct3D9", "OpenGL video output for Windows", "DirextX (DirectDraw) video output" without success.

I don't think it's glitched, the entire toolbar behaviour has changed since the 3.0.18 release. I used to be able to move the mouse anywhere over the video in full screen mode and the control bar would show. Now it does not, you have to click in order to make it show up. This is a deal breaker for me and makes 3.0.19 unusable. We need the full screen toolbar behaviour to match 3.0.18. In the meantime, back to 3.0.18 for me.

It is definitely glitched. It's not easy to describe exactly what happens as it's not very consistent.

It can go up to a complete wrecking of the displaying of all windows (not just the VLC one). All windows unable to refresh their content.

The surest way of reproducing this in my experience is to maximize the VLC window while it is playing a video, make the toolbar appear by having the mouse cursor at the bottom of the screen and then repeatedly click on the "Step forward" (or "Step backward") button. When VLC steps forward in the video, it looks like it's refreshing the video content 'over' the toolbar, making it disappear. The next click on the same button then fails (no toolbar displayed). Continuing to use the toolbar can have totally unexpected results, as if there was a mouse click in reserve suddenly applied to some unexpected control on the toolbar.

Hope this helps. Hope too that the fix can be included in a not too distant intermediate release. (It was really annoying to wait so long for a fix of the .flac glitches in the previous release.)

Would be glad to help in any way I can for tests/way to reproduce, if needed.

VLC cannot normally mess other apps, only its self. If it's that bad, then unfortunately it must be a bug in a system component (such as display drivers).

I can't reproduce it with the Nvidia graphics cards I have and using Direct3D11, which I believe is the default setting on Windows.

Aargh. Was really hoping it would be easy to reproduce, as it's easy to me. Thanks for trying.

I was configured with "Automatic" when I first experienced the glitching. I was able to reproduce the glitches with "Direct3D11 video ouptut" and "Direct3d9 video ouptut".

With "OpenGL video output for Windows", I couldn't make the toolbar appear at all (is that normal?). Even weirder, as I was trying to extricate myself by means of keyboard shortcuts, I tried F11 to switch from full screen, and even though the VLC windows was in full screen, masking all other windows, it was the Windows File Explorer in the background that switched in full screen... I ultimately had to use [Ctrl][Alt][Del] to get to the task manager and retake control of the VLC window.

Very similar results with "OpenGL video output" (not "OpenGL video output for Windows", no idea what the difference is). I noticed that I couldn't get a mouse cursor on the screen simply by moving the mouse, I had to click with no cursor in view to get it to appear for a few seconds when I could move it as usual before it disappeared again while moving the mouse.

Back to "Automatic" for now.

I do hear that it could indeed be my computer hardware failing or some outdated driver. But my system is very stable with others apps, I use it with demanding applications for video, music, graphic and 3D production without glitches. And VLC was behaving as expected with the previous version.

Not mentioning that if hard to reproduce, we are nonetheless a few that seem to have the same problem?

Anyone else can reproduce?

- Deleted %appdata%\vlc

- Right click in the VLC window > Tools > Customize interface > Fullscreen Controller >
Restored only the button "Step forward" needed for the test

- Test reproduces the same glitches

Next test:

- Deleted %appdata%\vlc

- Downgraded to 3.0.18 by running "vlc-3.0.18-win64.exe" without uninstalling first (hope that's OK, trying to not trigger W10 file types association troubles).

- Right click in the VLC window > Tools > Customize interface > Fullscreen Controller >
Restored only the button "Step forward" needed for the test

- *Gone are the glitches*

If I'm not mistaken, I believe this disprove the failing hardware/outdated driver hypothesis.

Hope we can solve this somehow.

Please try this nightly build and report back:
https://artifacts.videolan.org/vlc-3.0/ ... 1015-0225/

- Installed directly (no uninstall, no prefs removal) vlc-3.0.19-win64-05dd1fe6.exe
- The glitches are still here. It could be in my imagination, I felt that maybe the toolbar disappeared less frequently, but I'm wouldn't swear it.

Thanks for your help.

I tried this one, issues with control bar in full screen persist.

When you click on play, the control bar usually disappears (it should remain since the mouse is over it), and the video remains paused. When clicking pause (video already playing) control bar usually disappears and video continues to play.

Does not happen every time but most of the time.

Pretty much exactly the kind of issues I see myself. Thanks for confirming.

You should create a new report ticket on the VLC issues tracker with your above report and the link to this thread:
https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc/-/issues

If possible, because of this:

Will do if/when I can, registration pending approval by GitLAB admin. Somebody else on this thread can, perhaps?

Two days later: "Your account is pending approval from your GitLab administrator and hence blocked. Please contact your GitLab administrator if you think this is an error."

I don't see it being approved any day soon... So I guess this bug truly doesn't exist!

Can't see what more I can do...

So we can't report this issue. Can you please report it?

I can't report it either. For some reason my account has been deactivated and despite of my requests has not been reactivated yet:
