Font Size in Menus in 3.0.18

Postby MercTech » 18 Jul 2023 10:14

VLC Media Player 64 Bit version 3.0.18 Vetinari

There is no way to adjust the font size used in the various menus and text displays. The text is so small as to be near unreadable.

This issue has been noted before but the only solution is, on Linux, to adjust QT settings. No solution for a windows environment can be found searching the VideoLAN forums.

It seems that no way to adjust the font size used for text in menus (NOT Subtitles) could be considered a serious bug. One would expect to have the adjustment of displayed text to be in the "Interface" section of the Preferences settings but none exists and VLC Media Player for Windows doesn't use the native Windows Fonts that can be adjusted via Windows Settings.

Does anyone know of a settings location for font size that I missed in my searching?

Alas, neither of those links are talking a bout how to adjust the font size of text menus within VLC. Changing the button size of controls by changing the compatability settings to Win8 instead of native Win11 does nothing for the text size.

If VLC used the system font settings instead of its own font there would be no problem so changing the system font size has no effect.

VLC needs to either use the system font settings or provide a control to vary the font size in order to have more legible text.

You should create a new report ticket on the VLC issues tracker with your above report and the link to this thread:

If possible, because of this:

I'm on VLC 3.0.20 in Windows 11 Pro 64-bit & there is still no way to control the size of fonts in the VLC UI. I want to emphasize, as our original poster did above, that I am not talking about subtitles. I am talking about the VLC user interface. Actually, my menu font & its size are fine for me. My problem is the Playlist & the Preferences dialog. Everything in both of those is so small I have to put on my reading glasses to see any of it. That is after I popped up the context menu in the Playlist & selected Display size -> Increase. It doesn't do diddly squat. Decrease similarly does nothing. I found this discussion:

https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.ph ... 0&p=542411

In that discussion, our friend @Lotesdelere claims there is nothing in VLC for controlling the UI font. I did the thing where you go into the Windows properties of vlc.exe & fiddle with the Compatibility settings, a futile exercise that does not affect anything at all as far as I can tell. All claims that VLC uses the operating system fonts are incorrect. If VLC used my system font setting, I wouldn't be here complaining. I am here to lobby for the addition of a way to control the UI font in VLC. Either correct the part of VLC that you think uses the system font but actually does not. Or supply a control somewhere -- in the Preferences, on a menu, I don't really care where -- that controls font settings inside the VLC UI. This is about the simple ergonomics of the product. It should not be necessary at this late date to be asking for something as fundamental as this. This should have been part of the product years ago. Whatever. Fix it now.

Can confirm menu font size is messed up when monitor is set to 4k resolution.

As a workaround until it's fixed, you can run it in compatibility mode, windows 8 compatibility mode seems to work for me.

Or in the apps properties, compatibility, change dpi settings at the bottom, the check the first box.
