timeline scroll bar not showing the Full length of the Video?

Postby Flourgrader » 27 Apr 2023 20:07

Hi Guys,
Can someone help me out please with a question?
I have VLC media player 3.0.18 running under windows 11.
I have a video recording done in by VLC.
It is 12GB in size.
From beginning to end it is about 5 hours running time.
When VLC runs the video, the timeline scroll bar only shows 38 minutes 20 seconds.
How can I change the settings in VLC to show the full 5 hours on the timeline scroll bar?
All of the video is there in the file as I tested it by watching all of the video
To the end of the video.
Thank You.

Please post the Media Info report of your files:
https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo/Download/Windows

Also open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com or on Justpaste.it if it's too long.

Log file is too large to load up here.
Will look at other method suggested.
extra Info:
Avidemux latest version 2023
reads the file OK !
Timeline is also Perfect.
Can't fault it !

Hi All,
I wanted to update my previouse post.
I loaded the video file (format.mp4) into Avidemux
Then saved it as (format.mkv)
Then loaded it into VLC.
I can see a 5 hour + video
With a timeline that works.
So the problem was VLC in making the recording I would say?
Thank You

The problem lies in the original MP4 container for some reason.

Yes, I agree Lotesdelere,
To put a little bit more meat on the bone!
Recordings that take less than an Hour, the timeline
Works OK.
Very Long video’s, the timeline does not.
If the MP4 container is corrupt, I wonder how then Avidemux
Has no problem in reading the container?
To fix the container I don’t just have to load it into Avidemux and save it as
Container.MKV . I can save it back out as a Container.MP4.
And re load it back into VLC media player, which then sees the container holding 5 Hours + of video.
At some point in length of time in recording something is going wrong in the format of the container!
For the time being I think I will stick with my quick fix that I have mentioned in my above post.
It does still leave VLC wanting a Fix?
Thank You.

It sounds like a bug with long recordings with VLC.
You should create a new ticket on the VLC Trac with your above report and the link to this thread:
