Can't delete files on iPad

Postby Krystman » 28 Jan 2023 11:12

I just installed VLC on a brand new iPad Pro. I plugged in a USB drive. I copied a few videos using the Files app into the VLC folder (where it says "Place media here to add them"). Now I can't seem to be able to delete them anymore in any way.

1. Deleting from within the VLC app doesn't work
I long-press the video. I chose "Delete". It asks me "Delete Selection - Confirm the deletion of the selection". I tap "Delete". Nothing happens. The video remains where it was. Sometimes it disappears for a few seconds but re-appears later. One time the App crashed.

2. Deleting from the Files app doesn't work
I navigate into the VLC folder from the Files app. I long-press the video. I chose "Delete". It says:
"[my video].mp4" couldn't be moved because you don't have permission to access ".Trash". You don't have permission
3. Deleting from Settings -> iPad Storage doesn't work
I tap on VLC. I scroll to Documents. I swipe on the video to reveal the Delete button. I tap it. Nothing happens.

Am I doing something wrong? Anything else I can try?

iPad SN is MNXF3FD/A

iOS is Version 16.3 (20D47)

VLC for iOS is Version 3.3.12 (447)

Hello,

Thank you for your feedback!

This issue does seem more related to the device than the application.
I imagine that you are able to open and read the files correctly, and the only problem is the deletion.

Have you tried to manage the storage of your iPad via your Mac?
Plug your iPad to your Mac, and via Finder you should be able to manage the storage of the device.
In the Files tab you can access the VLC application storage and try to delete the files you no longer wish to keep.

And if you are still able to see the deleted files in the application, there is an option in the Media library section of the Settings tab that allows you to rescan the media library.
By performing this action you should no longer see the deleted files.

Hope this will help!

Hmm, well I don't have a Mac. I use the iPad as a stand-alone device.

Here is what I did in the meantime:

I tried deleting VLC. This made the entire folder with the video files disappear. But I suspect the video files were transferred into my Photo library. Because despite having just a handful of photos in the Library, the Photo app now had a storage space use of a couple of GB. There was no way for me to even access the video files anymore. At this point I wiped the whole iPad and re-installed the OS.

And now I will be very careful about moving video files onto the iPad.
