Can the vlc team please make a patch with working resume playback. It's driving me mad when I have used alternative player due to lack of testing of the latest vlc. If you make any new version please test everything before realizing to the public.

I have 3.0.6 and resume only works sometimes. Also recent media does not always show everything I have played. Possible factors contributing to this although I have tested and cannot find a way to duplicate it...

Hi,

This feature works fine for me. Have you:
- Tried to reset your preferences?
- Checked that the "Continue playback?" setting is set to "Ask" (tools -> preferences -> interface tab)

Does it work sometimes? Do you play local files or distant files or both?

Hello,

I have exactly the same problem.
The resume playback doesn't work.
I have installed VLC on 3 different PC (2 with windows 10 and 1 with windows 7).
Continue playback is on always. I tryed to put it on Ask, but it doesn't ask anymore.
My files are on a local HDD.

I have also tried with a portable version of VLC.
The resume playback works for the very first video played, until it is deleted. But with the following files, not. Nada. Niente. Niet.
It's very strange.

I am also waiting for the fix, but I have discovered that it only fails to automatically continue playback for certain file types, and works fine for other file types. I use the .ts file extension the most, and that is the one that fails. Most other file extensions for video and audio work fine. I am forced to set "Continue playback?" to "Ask" and if I'm super fast I can respond quickly enough to have the video resume from the last position. I want to be able to set "Continue playback?" to "Always" and have it work (start at the last position, not at the beginning) for .ts files. Otherwise, at least give me an option to increase the time to respond when it asks to continue playback.

Hello,

I am sorry to moan but the situation is indeed very annoying.

I can confirm the experiences of the above posters. After a long absence I just now tried the latest version of the player (3.0.7.1) and the situation is the same as another user and I had described it already 3 years ago: https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=129989

I don't understand why it is not possible such a basic feature to make work how it should and as other players manage it without any problem: This defect is the reason why I (have to) use the GOM Player with which I absolutely never had such an issue.

This feature works fine for me.

Maybe it works for certain formats (e.g. AVI according with my tests in the past). But did you try the feature with a commercial DVD? In this case is does not (and did never) work for me.

I wish to confirm that VLC V 3.0.7.1 still has an issue with resuming. eg if I have a video open in VLC, and I drag the progress bar forward or backwards, then VLC will resume at random places, rather than where I have dragged to. I noticed the problem in V3.0.6, and is unchanged in V 3.0.7.
Win10 Pro 64bit playing .mp4s 264.

VLC has been my default video player for years and may I congratulate and thank you good people for such an excellent product.

Regards,
Doug

so they broke it. bad this time since it's several versions already and still not working.

once it gets fixed, they should fork it and keep a golden copy where playback is working. really i shouldn't tell you this.

Hi,

The feature works in 3.0 for the latest played media. In the future, still unreleased 4.0 branch, the last playback is stored in the newly added medialibrary and can be restored as wanted. Before that there was no way to do this properly.
