VLC "pausing" every 10 minutes

osx catalina, all videos (local files) pause/buffer inexplicably for 8 to 10 seconds approximately every 10 minutes, regardless of resolution, bit rate, anything. latest version of vlc. after the 8-10 second pause, the video resumes from the same place.

eliminated any potential of key stroke or a mouse pause button glitch.

totally lost!

What kind of Mac do you use? Is the media stored on a DVD or an actually spinning hard disk instead of an SSD?

Mac mini late 2014. Stored on internal non ssd drive, but it doesn’t seem like a drive issue...
