What REALLY puzzles me though is this:

If I play "standard" M4V/MOV encoded video files or even DVD images from a (Raspberry Pi 3) server through DLNA, the graphical issues are ALL over the place. However, if I play the SAME files locally on my Macbook Pro with LAN and uPnP turned off, everything is running smooth with no graphical artifacts/tearing or any sign of GUI going nuts.

Is this ye olde "macrovision" story for a new generation, or just a coincidence? I've tried to debug quite extensively for the last hour or so, and it seems somehow related to streaming/network activity. :?:

(By the way, I can't figure out a way to post URL's with a proper link.)

I would assume that this is a coincidence. The source of the media does not affect the bug in the graphics card driver leading to the distortion. Note that while this should be fixed by Apple, we are purchasing an affected Mac now for testing purposes and to check whether we can provide a work-around on our side.

These did not help with my vlc glitching.

The nvidia web drivers did, see

With kind regards ....

Hello,

thank you for your discussion and help / info.

With regards to the nvidia Web drivers: I have had them installed, and later on removed.

I also do see the graphic glitch, for me on macOS 10.14.6 the transparency reduction switch set to OFF does remove the glitch, as reported.

VLC 3.0.8

However: would an update to macOS 10.15 Catalina help by default?

Cheers

Another hint:

I am running my MacBook Pro (NVIDIA discrete GPU) connected to an external display using DisplayPort. The graphic glitch only! appears when the external display is connected. Running it without the external display - no problem, regardless of the transparency.

However I should check on another MacBook ...

Edit:

MacBook Air with same config as above (with and without external display) is running fine.

Cheers

For me it helped to turn off "reduce transparency" (even though I really don't like the transparency).
BUT whenever I open a Terminal window it starts again and the whole screen becomes so glitched it's unusable until I force quit VLC.

I use a TV over HDMI as my monitor most of the time.
BUT whenever I use the integrated screen the glitches don't appear, even with "reduce transparency" turned on and a Terminal window.
edit: did not see the last post. So I can confirm this. Config: MB Pro Late 2013 with switchable Graphics Card

Turning off reduced transparency only solved the issue temporarily for me. After a few minutes, everything was back to normal.
Digging a bit deeper, it seems that something is seriously corrupting the software running on the GPU, and making it crash.

Code: Select all

I have a couple dozen of those error logs with all either "0x1f Access Violation Error (MMU Error 2)" or "0xd Graphics Engine Error (GR Exception Error)" as exception type.
So while workaround might be nice, it really looks like the root of this issue is somewhere in the GPU firmware or driver, and not at a higher level.

as battlefield said - on the post - Graphic glitches with VLC and Alfred App in 10.14.6

downgrade to version 2.2.8 is the only fix that works for me too.

Running on a late 2012 iMac with Mojave 10.14.6.

VLC 3.0.8 was fine yesterday, strangely. Only downloaded and installed VLC yesterday morning on a fresh upgrade to Mojave but after transcoding a bunch of MKVs last night with handbrake I found the gpu appeared to crash and the console.app displayed a lot of "com.apple.message.domain: com.apple.crashreporter.writereport.gpuRestart" messages when viewing the results of the handbrake transcodes.

My first thought was that handbrake had created faulty output files, but crashing was occurring with known good files too. Could open M4V files in Quicktime Player which would play fine so gpu appeared to be OK. Same files played in VLC 3.0.8 would crash the GPU.

Just want to say thanks for suggestion with "Reduce Transparency" because it solved my issue too!

I have 3.0.8, Mac OS X 10.14.6 and had the problem only when receiver connected via DisplayPort. But if use VLC without external display everything worked fine. Now with disabled "Reduce Transparency" it works in both modes.

However: would an update to macOS 10.15 Catalina help by default?
If you using Mojave and switch to Catalina, that is an UPGRADE, not an UPDATE... people often use these terms interchangeably and it causes unnecessary confusion.
For instance, an 'update' would be updating macOS Mojave 10.14.5 to 10.14.6, both of which are categorized under the OS 'Mojave'; an 'upgrade' would be installing a newer OS on top of a previous OS, i.e. upgrading macOS Mojave 10.14.6 to macOS Catalina 10.15.1.

Hello,

Just FYI, this issue was resolved with the 3.0.10 update of VLC released this week.

Please enjoy!
