Viewing *.H264 File from Surveillance DVR

Hello All,
I apologize if I made a covered topic. I saved a section of recorded video from our surveillance system for possible future evidence. The file saved in the H264 format, but when I tried to view the video through VLC v3.0.6 on a Win 10 machine, nothing seems to happen. I saw in another post to turn messages on to 2 (debugging), which I did. Could someone please help me out?
