Chromecast Audio VLC (Windows & Android)?

Postby laionidas » 10 Jul 2018 13:28

So, about half a year ago I noticed VLC Player on my Android phone being able to cast video succesfully to my Chromecast on my TV. Since I also had a hi-fi installation with an old (but solid) analog amplifier, I figured I get myself a Chromecast Audio too, and enjoy the music I always keep on my phone on my livingroom hi-fi set, without the hassle of CD's or expensive digital media receivers.

It worked like a charm, and what's more: when I was sitting in the livingroom with my Windows 10 Pro laptop, I could also cast directly from that device, by selecting my Chromecast Audio as the "renderer" in VLC's appropriate drop menu.

That was however, up intill about two months ago. Now, I can still cast from my Android phone, but it loses its connection to the Chromecast quite frequently, even though both the Chromecast, the phone, and the wifi radio are within just one meter distance of eachother. In fact, the "cast" icon frequently dissapears from VLC alltogether, and won't reappear, without forcibly closing the VLC app through Android's settings.

At least it can still cast though. Unfortunately the same can not be said about my Windows 10 Pro laptop. Nowadays, whenever I select my Chromecast Audio as the "renderer", it makes a sound, verifying that there is a connection, but no music is actually being played afterwards. VLC player will show that the song is being played, but the progress bar is not moving, and hitting play, stop, or pause doesn't change anything.

Since then, I tried reïnstalling VLC on both my phone and my Windows 10 Pro laptop. I reconfigured my Chromecast Audio numerous time, reset it to factory settings, and did the same for my modem/wifi radio, but to no avail. It's weird, since the connection sound confirms that the devices are connected properly, and when it does cast from my phone, it streams the media flawlessly. It also worked just fine for months, in the exact same setup. I'm starting to suspect some kind of bug with the newer version of VLC that were rolled out about two months ago.

Does anyone have a sollution, or has anyone encountered the same problems?

Hi,
To help you, we need messages, to completely understand what your problems is.

From windows command line or linux or macos terminal, launch vlc with options -vv and --logfile=file

  • Windows example: vlc.exe -vv --logfile=c:\vlclog.txt
  • Linux example: vlc -vv --logfile=vlclog.txt, or vlc -vv 2>&1 > logfile.txt
Then paste the full resulting log here between [code]and[/code] (or use Pastebin.com if it's too long)

Also don't forget to name your Operating System and provide the VLC media player version.

Hi Choquette,

Thank you.

I'm running VLC version 3.0.3 Vetinari on Windows 10 Pro NL x64.

I just played a more or less random music file, and got the same result: there's a connection sound, but no actual music playing. Please find the .log below.

Fixed it after I remember other programs (noticably GOG Galaxy) having similar issues:

The trick is to install VLC x64 to "C:\something", instead of "C:\program files\something", so any other folder than "program files" really. There is also a firewall prompt after every fresh installation, when installing to other folders than "program files", but not when installing to the latter. I haven't tried manually creating firewall exceptions for a "program files" installation, but I think I did in the past and it made no difference. I am sure I tried it for other programs (like GOG Galaxy), and it didn't resolve the issue either, while an installation to "C:\something", instead of "C:\program files\something", did. Recent versions of Windows 10 x64 just seem to have some connectivity and access-rights issues that can't be resolved by granting administrator permission.

I have also a chromecast audio which worked fine from various devices.
About 2 month ago it stopped working form my windows pc. Chromecast audio is not visible as renderer.
2 weeks ago it worked again for a week or so, but now it doesn't work again.
VLC is installed on a 64 bit windows home version.

To my surprise it works on my old windows 10 laptop (32bit).
After reading the previous post I have installed VLC in another directoy than program files and rebooted. However that did not solve the problem in my case

Yours sounds more like a "regular" connectivity issue, since when it doesn't work for you, it doesn't seem to find the Chromecast as a renderer at all (whereas in my case it would, but it would not play).

I haven't kept track of it, but there are a lot of settings in VLC that affect connectivity, and these can quite easily be accidentally altered, or altered automatically after an updated. I suggest you try resetting VLC's preferences first, reset your Chromecast Audio, reconfirm your wifi, and if that doesn't work, search the forum and Google specifically for conectivity issues.
