Where is the log?

Postby markfilipak » 23 Jun 2015 19:51

I was listening to 'http://audio1.ideastream.org/wcpn64.mp3', but it stopped. I was showed a message that said I should check the log. Where is the log?

If VLC knows something is wrong, why doesn't it just tell me what's wrong?

If VLC knows I should check the log, why doesn't it simply open the log and show it to me?

Thanks, Jean-Baptiste. "-vvv", eh? Now, why didn't I think of that?

I have the same problem, but I was trying to repair that problem 3 times and it's ok.
I wish I knew what was wrong. Jean-Baptiste Kempf replied to me. He wrote: "-vvv". I have no idea what he meant. I've pretty much given up on VLC.

This a command line argument. So if you launch VLC on the shell with

Code: Select all

vlc -vvv
, you'll receive all the debug output directly on that shell.

Alternatively, see the "Messages" panel accessible through the "Window" menu which allows you to see the log within the application.

Finally, you can set advanced preferences options to directly log to a file.

Thank you. The output is below. Is there a log there? Is there a pointer to a log? I couldn't find one -- I searched for "log". And what users are going to launch VLC by terminal: "vlc -vvv"? I have a Whiskers Menu that launches VLC. It has nothing for viewing logs. What good is running "vlc -vvv" after there's a problem?
Alternatively, see the "Messages" panel accessible through the "Window" menu which allows you to see the log within the application.
Well, it's not a "Window" menu... I found a "Messages" panel in a "Tools" menu. It shows nothing for "vlc". It shows something only for "vlc -vvv". Again, what good is that? And if I should look at it, why doesn't VLC simply show it to me? And how am I going to know that "Messages" is something I should look at? I mean... Really: This is like spreading out all the parts of a car on the floor in front of the user and saying, "There! Now you have everything you need to get to Paris."
Finally, you can set advanced preferences options to directly log to a file.
Why doesn't VLC do that for me? It could simply overwrite an existing file. That way, if I have trouble, I can look at the log while VLC is running (or before running VLC a second time). Pushing this sort of problem out to the user just makes VLC look bad. The problem isn't the user's problem.

Now, below is the output of "vlc -vvv". I have no idea what any of that means.

Code: Select all

When VLC can't connect with a stream, VLC says: "VLC is unable to open the MRL 'http://170.254.18.90:8054/stream'. Check the log for details."

The only problem is that there is no log file by default!

Whoever has Wiki editing access, PLEASE add the following note on this page https://wiki.videolan.org/VSG:Main/

"Note: Information on viewing VLC's log file can be found here."

The word "here" should link to a separate page with this information:

"By default, VLC does not create a separate (.txt) log file. You can view the log from within VLC or you can change VLC's preferences to have VLC create a separate log file.

To view the log within VLC:
1. Click Tools > Messages.
2. (Optional) You can change the logging level by changing the value in the Verbosity box. This changes the level of detail shown in the log.

To have VLC create a separate log file (.txt), do the following:
1. Select Tools > Preferences.
2. Under Show Settings (at the bottom of the window), click All.
3. Under Advanced, click Logger.
4. Click Log to File.
5. Click Browse and select a name and location for the log file."

Thank you for posting this. It's the one thing I came here to find out about and yet I was close to giving up on it. Searching the forum for info on the log location was turning up thread after thread that suddenly just end when someone asks specifically about it! You'd think it was taboo or something. :?
