Just adding a "me too" to this. In fact, a Google search on the problem shows this is a prominent bug with a LOT of reports.

I'm on VLC 3.0.3 (but I downgraded to 3.0.2 as an experiment, and got the same problems) on a 2011 MBP OS 10.10.5 with AMD Radeon HD 6750M. I get random crashes with or without hardware acceleration. I wouldn't mind downgrading even further to a previous stable version, except that I depend on VLC to render a stream to Chromecast.

The report is identical to what others have seen here, too: "Service exited with abnormal code: 5" (which means nothing that Google can find)

VLC, please help us with this! I'm a donor user, but switching over to MPV just for now so I can watch a video, but I want my VLC back as soon as this is fixed.

Thanks!

So far, this seems to happen to certain users and not others, but we cannot reproduce, nor obtain a good stacktrace.

How far back do you want console messages prior to the crash to be provided to you? Here's just a snippet of the pre-crash stacktrace:

7/7/18 10:59:52.988 PM mdworker[1789]: code validation failed in the process of getting signing information: Error Domain=NSOSStatusErrorDomain Code=-67062 "The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error -67062.)" UserInfo=0x7fbc9b4536a0 {SecCSArchitecture=i386}
7/7/18 10:59:57.577 PM com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (com.apple.imfoundation.IMRemoteURLConnectionAgent) The _DirtyJetsamMemoryLimit key is not available on this platform.
7/7/18 11:00:18.194 PM CoreServicesUIAgent[1029]: unexpected message <OS_xpc_error: <error: 0x108df1c60> { count = 1, contents =
"XPCErrorDescription" => <string: 0x108df1f70> { length = 18, contents = "Connection invalid" }
}>
7/7/18 11:00:18.219 PM com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (org.videolan.vlc.162480[1742]) Service exited with abnormal code: 5

I've removed 3.0.2 and now using 3.0.1. I'll revert back an iteration one at a time to see where the crashes begin.

Addendum: 3.0.1 crashed just now, too, but I spotted this in the console record:

7/7/18 11:25:21.000 PM kernel[0]: The graphics driver has detected a corruption in its command stream.
7/7/18 11:25:22.911 PM com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (com.apple.xpc.launchd.oneshot.0x10000010.VLC[1859]) Service exited with abnormal code: 5

This looks like the infamous HD3000 OpenGL driver crash.

the question is why does v3.0 crash while v2.2.x plays perfectly fine. it may be the opengl driver crashing, but it's vlc 3.0 that's triggering the crash, while v2.2 and other media players like IINA, Movist, mplayer, etc. don't crash. i still think there is a bug in the vlc 3 code triggering this (as well as a bug that causes video framerate to stutter when the full-screen OSD or system volume OSD is shown, neither which causes stuttering in vlc 2.2).

Because VLC 3.0 uses a new technique to have hardware acceleration and direct bypass to OpenGL to have the least CPU and GPU used.

It seems to work fine, except for the HD 3000.

You think we have to stop the VLC adventure or wait for this bug to be fixed ?

No, we need to find the same mac, to reproduce the issue.

don't know what you fixed, but this build does not crash. :D also it no longer stutters when OSD controller is displayed. so this build killed two bugs for me. i'll continue testing, but so far looking good. nice job and thank you!

just curious, can you explain what the fix was to resolve this issue? or point me to the bug tracker issue so i know what to do in the future if a similar bug appears again. you don't have to, but i was just wondering what was patched.

also want to remind everyone affected by this issue to donate if you can. your contributions are what makes resolving issues like this possible.

I have the HD 3000 too with the same problem. How do I perform this? I'm sure it's documented but I couldn't find it. Thanks.

After installing 3.0.4: Well (watching an avi) it doesn't crash anymore but every five seconds or so it stops play, goes black, then resumes with gray artifacts. Not watchable in other words.
