This option should be present. Music files usually have correct metadata but why should I be bothered to properly tag hundreds of separate parts of my audiobook library? I tried some other players and found that foobar2000 is excellent alternative.

At the top of the screen, try clicking on <Tools>, then <Preferences>. At the bottom left of the popup box, click <All> next to "Show Settings". Click on <Input/Codecs> on the left, and in the popup screen on the right, scroll down to the bottom. Next to "Change title according to media", change the entry to "$F" without the quotes for path/file name or "$U" without the quotes for file name only. If you hover the mouse over the box, it will show some other possible settings. Click <Save>, then close and reopen the program.

This $F and $U options are working only for name in vlc windows title, playlist names are still wrong. I tried also to correct tags myself with external programa but ended with only messing up my files because I was stubborn to keep using vlc.

I thought I wrote a ticket for this quite some time ago. I found my ticket again, and realised I forgot to mention the file name, added that to the ticket now.

See this ticket 18600 about adding new columns:
- file name
- file creation date
- file last modified date
- file size

Then there are some tickets regarding filename in VLC window title bar and filename in OSD video title (show media title on video start): #16150, #7967.

What am I missing? I can't post a New message, I don't see a button or link. The only place I can post is in response to an existing thread.

Anyway, my issue is - File names are not listed in my playlist. Filename 6YwwsI78O.mp3 displays as 20cb4f5q7324c91 ("Title")! I don't know where this comes from or why it is the case. But with dozens of files in the list, I have to listen to them ALL potentially to find any one particular file.
How do I display the actual Filename in the playlist? It doesn't even show in the metadata.

There are lots of examples in this thread some even with screenshots that explains the possible benefits of being able to opt out of the metadata provided within many media files. For example when the metadata is faulty within hundreds of files, one click in settings and poof, problem gone.

Hard question to answer.
I "care in the playlist" because I use it. If it displays the filenames i can make use of the information, if it displays the faulty metadata as "title" I can not.

Look at the screenshot provided earlier by a fellow vlc user an I think you will see problem.

Please make sure that it is not encoded for non-English characters, and it was convenient to read.

Not media library, i drag and drop a bunch of files into the playlist (not docked) and the filenames are displayed thanx to the "do not parse" setting. However, when an episode is played the meta is read and the title changes to match metadata. I fall asleep and next day the whole playlist is filled with the irrelevant metadata and I have no clues at all to assertain which episode to start. The filenames would make it possible for me to recognize what episode to start.

ALSO if 'do not preparse' option is used, we will not get total playlist length, which is must have.
I guess the easiest way to implement this feature would be save the list of unpreparsed files, and after parsing playlist just add a column for it so we can use it for good.

Depends. Some people consider playlists as sources, not as the "current playlist", aka "the play queue".

Yes, sorting does change the order. Consider this simple playlist.
First item has a name 25.track.mp3, but since it has metadata in it, it won't be sorted properly, because it has some garbage in metatags.
If we had a possibility to omit reading metadata from files when playlist is parsed, it would be a solution. Or add another sort column with filenames only.

This is for a tv series and the problem is that its jumbling the episodes by displaying the title name of the episode name and not episode number so their all out of order.
I would like to display the filename so it sorts properly by order of the files according to the ep number instead of by title name.
