Can VLC play 4k ultra HD video

Postby andylolly » 17 May 2016 12:39

New to VLC & love its many options, however I am unable to play 4k video, doesn't start then very choppy. No problem with other players so nothing wrong with my system or CPU.
Would welcome any advice.
Thanks.

Thanks but I have been right through that topic & cannot find this GPU thing. Don't know what I am doing wrong but I cannot get the page shown in the screenshot. So I still have to use other players for 4k video.

Further to my above reply............I have now solved this to some extent by resetting preferences. However if I try to use the interactive zoom, a great feature of VLC, my favourite, then the picture just freezes. Can anyone help or advise on this?
Thanks.

GPU acceleration is broken since 2.2.x release. No GPU is used :(

Six months on!
Is this problem sorted yet? VLC is the premier player that plays anything..........or is it??

The 4K video playback with VLC has strict requirements on the computer's processor and graphics chip. Sometimes, even if your computer meets the requirements, you may find that 4K video plays back choppy. This is due to the immense processing power required to play 4K. You can fix this issue by enabling the GPU accelerated decoding feature in VLC, this feature in theory uses the processing power of the graphic card to lighten the load on the processor of the system.

However, according to VLC's GPU decoding page, this feature is only available for H.264 streams. In addition, as the data is decoded in the GPU at the decoding stage and then transferred back to the player so that the other stages, filtering and streaming for instance, can be processed, this process can under under circumstances be slower than without gpu acceleration enabled. What's more, the VLC GPU decoding is only available for select operating systems. While Windows Vista and newer versions of the Microsoft operating system are supported, Windows XP is not at this point in time. The majority of graphic cards should support hardware acceleration just fine. Make sure you have installed the latest drivers though.

Thanks for the advice Nephele but I cannot find how to " enable GPU accelerated decoding ". When I go to preferences> input & codecs I do not get the page as shown in Lotesdelere screen shot so I cannot enable?
Help please. Thanks.

Open VLC Media Player and click on Tools > Preferences or press Ctrl-P to open the settings window of the program. If you are using the simple settings interface, click on Input & Codecs on the left sidebar and check the Use GPU accelerated decoding box there.
If you are using the "all" interface select Input/Codecs > Video Codecs > FFmpeg > Hardware decoding instead to enable acceleration this way.
Click on the save button afterwards and restart the media player to work with the new setting. Try playing several video files to see if hardware acceleration makes a difference in terms of playback. If it does, keep the setting enabled. If it does not, just go back to the settings to uncheck the option again.

"Automatic" & "DXVA" are both ways to enable acceleration. If it ain't disabled, it's enabled. :D
According to page https://wiki.videolan.org/VLC_GPU_Decoding/ of VideoLAN's Wiki, "In VLC version 2.1, you can select which acceleration method you wish to use among those available for your operating system (if any). In earlier versions, there was simply a check box."

I have the same problems with choppy, stuttering 4K videos from my drone.
I started with resetting my VLC to default settings. Then I went to "Input/Codecs" and set "Hardware Acceleration" to "Automatic".
This brings no speed benefit at all - the video is as choppy and stuttery as before.

Then I set the setting to "DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA) 2.0" and VLC crashes whenever I want to start one of the videos.
(It wants to send a crash report but then it encounters "an error while connecting to the FTP server".)
I use an Intel 4400 with the latest drivers and the videos are fine! If I play them with Windows' own "Film & TV" App they run as smooth as butter..

Any advice?

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

Also upload a short sample of a problematic file to either Zippyshare.com (200 MB max) or to EmbedUpload.com, the latter will upload the file for you to several other hosts (use the default ones) and then post the link to the file here.

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=57724&p=193335#p193335
50 MB max should be enough.

Whenever I set the Log to 2 and start playing a file with DXVA enabled the player crashes. However, if I then want to open the log to export it it's empty and set to 0 again. So I can't help you why VLC is crashing..
However, I can post a log of a stuttery video:

I also created a split of my file. Please note that I am unable to actually see any video of the split, since the player remains blank. Maybe that's normal..

The video is recorded through a DJI Mavic Pro - not a unpopular model..

To d-Raven-b - I use a DJI Phantom 4 Pro and had the same problem as you with 4K playback, but Nephele's solution above fixed this for me - selecting the "DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA) 2.0" option [WIN10-64]. However, note that I am using the DJI 4K-H264 option, not H265 - could make a difference.

Hi all,

I ran into this same problem running an 8 core AMD system with 16GB memory and a GTX970 vid card. Every other program seemed to be ok with playing my DJI Mavic's 4k MP4 files but I really wanted VLC for taking snapshots from the flight footage, and the lag was so bad it was hardly even updating at all. SO, I followed the advice to check acceleration, and sure enough it was turned off, but enabling it only just made it faster. I was still getting only say 1 frame per second playback rates. Then it clicked in my head... Hadn't I set some post processing in VLC because I wanted better contrast and color rendition when playing movies? That might hurt performance, surely. Turns out I was so very right. Not only did I have a filter going for contrast and brightness, I also had a sharpening filter turned on. Killing the levels filter sped it up a little, but turning off the sharpening filter took away all the lag and made it nice and fluid.

You can find these options by right clicking right in the playback view while playing a movie, and then click "Tools" and then "Effects and Filters" and then clicking the "Video Effects" tab in the middle of the little window that pops up. Make sure that both "Image Adjust" and "Sharpen" are disabled. Just disabling "Sharpen" will probably make more than enough difference all by itself. It's a huge fat resource pig.

Hope this helps some of you like it helped me. VLC is one of the few options to pull full res snaps out of a 4K video when not using a 4K monitor. This besides the fact that VLC is just completely awesome no matter what. :-)
