URGENT (bug discovered) - Persistent green line when playing videos after the latest update.

Postby MrMister » 12 Jun 2016 00:15

Hi,

I've discovered a bug. This is urgent, and it is happenning after the latest update.
  • After the last update you did something that is affecting the way videos are played, and it shows a persistent green line.
The problem happen with videos of 720 x 304 pixels and XVID code, Color Space YUV
The problem happen when VLC is at full screen
The problem happen when playing this kind of videos in Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080)
The problem only happen after the latest update, it did not happen with the old previous version
The problem do not happen with other video players such as Windows Media Player
The last days I was told to update VideoLAN to the newest version and that it had a lot of improvements, so I've updated VideoLan.
After updating, when I play videos in full screen, I get a very ugly, disturbing and persistent green line.
This is not a problem from my videos, I am very sure about this, because I am using VideoLAN since 2008... so I always used it.
Last week, with the last version, I was playing all my videos perfectly, without the green line, so I know my videos are fine.
After I've installed the new update, the problem started, and I get a persistent green line.
See it for yourself.

This bug happen only with certain videos of certain dimensions. My computer resolution is 1920 x 1080 Full HD.

THE PROBLEM HAPPEN WITH THIS KIND OF VIDEOS

Code: Select all

Video ID : 0 Format : MPEG-4 Visual Format profile : Advanced Simple@L5 Format settings, BVOP : 2 Format settings, QPel : No Format settings, GMC : No warppoints Format settings, Matrix : Default (MPEG) Codec ID : XVID Codec ID/Hint : XviD Duration : 1h 48mn Bit rate : 2 048 Kbps Width : 720 pixels Height : 304 pixels Display aspect ratio : 2.35:1 Frame rate : 23.976 fps Color space : YUV Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0 Bit depth : 8 bits Scan type : Progressive Compression mode : Lossy Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.390 Stream size : 1.56 GiB (82%) Writing library : XviD 67
However, other kind of videos works fine. Are just videos with these features.

As I said again, I know this is a bug because I had the previous version from VideoLAN and it was playing all my videos fine, so this is happening after the latest update.

Also I must tell that I have tested the videos with many other video players, and I don't have any green line. Even I've tested the videos in desktop media players connected to the TV, and they works fine. The problem is only with VideoLAN and after the latest update.

How may I download the previous version? I really cannot still using the latest version, because sincerely I don't resist this green line burning my eyes all the time.

Here you can see the same videos played with Windows Media Player, no green line at all.

I really would need to come back to the previous version, so you can fix this but in the meantime I can continue playing my videos normally.

Where may I download the previous version to the last update?

Hi, I've solved the problem, so I will explain step by step how did I.
HOWEVER, PLEASE, fix this problem, because you did something to the player that is creating a green line very disturbing.
Talking clearly, VLC Media player is the best player in the world. I was a bit bored of its interface, very simplistic and ugly... so sometimes I tried other players. I always had to come back to VLC, because the picture quality is outstanding. Even if you have a bad video, VLC improve it and makes it amazing.
Videolan is like the gas company. If the company fail, all people don't have gas in their houses, so it is something extremely necessary.
I guess users are nervous and posting comments with the thing of the green line.

OKAY, MY SOLUTION (UNTIL YOU FIX THIS IN A NEW UPDATE).
- Reset the preferences of VLC Media Player.
When the software is installed, you also have a program to reset the preferences of the player.
See the screenshot here:

Then, open VLC and change the preferences to make the output OpenGL
You go to Tools... Preferences... Video

There, in output, select OpenGL
Please, see the screenshot here, it is in Spanish but it is easy to understand.

After this, the green line go away.
