VLC 2.2.0 Unable to play HD videos properly ?

Postby reglis » 04 Mar 2015 13:54

Hi,

Unable to play HD videos properly, the picture is jerky, with my old processor while it was possible with the 2.1.5 release?

VLC 2.1.5 OK
VLC 2.1.5 upgrade 2.2.0: jerks
VLC 2.2.0 new installation: jerks
VLC 2.2.0 downgrade 2.1.5: jerks

Where is the parameter file? I would compare those in 2.2.0 and 2.1.5.

Best Regards,
Régis

You need to completely uninstall to downgrade.

I'm investigating a performance regression, on 2.2.0 on Windows.

I see the same thing, I've tried both 32bit and 64bit versions of 2.2.0 and see stuttering, and block corruption post stuttering, on HD videos. When using 2.1.5 no stuttering, nor corruption, at all.

Have reverted back to 2.1.5 for now, but if more information is required then I could install 2.2.0 also.

HELP For the past several months I am getting random gray pixelated screens that last for 1-3 seconds and disrupts the movie playback. It happens to MKV and MPG files. Also I have tried both RADEON HD7950 and NVIDIA GTX960 graphics cards and it still happens. It is not the source file as it is random and cannot be duplicated. Usually this happens about 3 to 5 times when watching a movie. HELP!!!!

The following is a screen capture: Note that it happens on 2.1.5 and 2.2.0. And two different graphic cards.

Hi. I'm also having problems with HD videos on 2.2.0, especially with mp4 files. mkv files seem to be working properly.

With HD mp4 files I'm having terrible lag. From the video statistics I can see that I'm losing about 10% of the frames (displayed 402 frames, lost 42 etc).

What information I should provide to find a solution?

"me too"

About 10% lost frames.

I noticed that v2.1.5 uses about 38% CPU while 2.2.0 uses "only" 30%. (these are total system CPU usage as indicated by Task Manager. Subtract a few % to get VLC value.)

It is a 4 core CPU (i5-2320), so 2.2.0 is using only 1 core it seems.

The movie file is a MOV H.264 with PCM sound (from video camera) 1080p60.

Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit (VLC is 32 bit).

I'm facing this problem too. Unable to run 1080P video properly.
720P lags a bit and 1080P is totally unwatchable.

EDIT:

Downgraded to 2.1.5 and the lag is gone.

Have you tried to force hardware acceleration? I mean put DXVA insted of automatic.

Hi,

Tools > Preferences > Input / Codecs > Hardware-accelerated decoding : Automatic / DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA) 2.0 / Disable no difference.

I have experienced all the issues mentioned above and tried all the fixes with minimum or no improvement. Clearing the prefs and cache seemed to alleviate it temporarily. However, their are files that never have these issues. The glaring difference seems to be the storage location. All the files that function normally are on local disks, beit OS or a storage drive. Anything on an external has this problem regardless of format. Also tried on 32 and 64 bit versions of 2.1.4, 2.1.5, and 2.2.1.

For information: the video plays (absolutely) perfectly (also in fullscreen modus in HD) with me on Linux:

vlc-2.0.9 using ffmpeg-0.10.16
vlc-2.2.3 using ffmpeg-2.8.6

It doesn't even show the minimal initial errors which I typically have with my usual files (ts-h264 record from DVB-T).

Of course there may be many issues with hardware acceleration etc. for the Windows binaries. There may be also be different versions of ffmpeg in play but I suppose this should not be the problem unless there is some "intermediary" bizarre bug in ffmpeg.

I have an Nvidia card (with official Nvidia driver) and an I5 with 4 cores, so no CPU problem.

Which version has solved the problem ? 2.2.1, 2.2.2 or 2.2.3 ?

VLC 2.2.3
Windows 10
Intel Q9650
Geforce GTX 680
Video acceleration: DXVA
Deinterlacing: Automatic + Blend

Video from reglis' post (Sat May 07, 2016 5:37 pm) is playing smoothly without losing any frames.
