Cannot play some YouTube videos

Postby cae222 » 24 Nov 2015 21:21

Some videos will simply not open in VLC. For instance, I tried to open this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXIDtf1wP0g. When VLC tried to open it, the error box opened with this in it: Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'https://r3---sn-qjo-cpne.googlevideo.co ... equiressl=...

Also, some videos that have worked in the past are no longer working, such as this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Llp8fD1tPRg. The error I get is pretty much the same kind as the previous one.

I have tried a lot of things to fix this. I have both youtube.lua and youtube.luac, and neither of them fix the problem. I have also tried to change some firewall settings, which has also not worked.

Looks like it has been recently fixed:
https://git.videolan.org/?p=vlc.git;a=c ... 318200ccdc

Get the new updated youtube.lua here:
https://git.videolan.org/?p=vlc/vlc-2.2 ... ua;hb=HEAD

I have tried updating the file but it still doesn't work! I am too confused to what is causing this.

Save this page as "youtube.lua" (without quotes):
https://git.videolan.org/?p=vlc/vlc-2.2 ... ua;hb=HEAD

Then copy the youtube.lua file to the \VLC\lua\playlist folder.

And delete the youtube.luac file in the same folder...

the solution above does not work actually (2018-08-25). Are there any other ways to fix that issue?
The link supplied by cae222 should work using the VLC player
hoping anyone has fixed this issue yet!

I vote for this fix. So much videos cannot be played... Could anybody, who understand already this bug, provide any explanation to me? I am a sw developer and I offer my help to fix this bug if someone helps me to save time for investigation. :)
I found for now, that youtube server returns forbidden (403)

Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (x64)
VideoLAN 3.0.4 (x64)

I did as suggested regarding youtube.lua and deleted youtube.luac. I still cannot stream https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJAHIE272Wo. I get the error:
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'https://r5---sn-a5meknlz.googlevideo.co ... BDDFF1DF1C'. Check the log for details.

By the way, where do I find the log to check for details.

I have had this problem a lot over the years and it was always corrected by updating my VLC player. Oddly this video mentioned in the above post does this with the latest player 3.0.4 which I am also using. That is odd and I'd say a newer version of VLC will be in the works.

Downloading with the 'codec method' of VLC has also changed. You cannot control the resolution of the download. It will give you 640 and that's all. Doesn't matter how high the original resolution was. I know Youtube is after the 'app' market and is more worried right now about files being to big for mobile devices than for Desktops. Maybe that has something to do with things? Just guessing.
