2.2 and MKV on local network.

Hi,
I have a problem since the 2.2 update. That's not really a problem or a bug, but it bothers me.
When playing a MKV file from the local network, it opened almost instantly with previous versions up to version 2.1.5.
Since 2.2, during the opening, there is a preloading which sometimes lasts for a minute.
There is no question of buffering setting, and I think that is due to new multiplex or codec, I searched in vain on this side, someone would have an idea of the parameter or the corresponding multiplex change leading to this latency ?
However, once opened, navigating the video in this specific situation is much faster than before, but I prefer a fast opening as a quick search.
It's not a network problem, it's the same on 300 Mbps Wifi or 1Gb Eternet link.
And it's with MKV only (maybe MP4), not AVI or streming playlist.

Same problem here.

One mkv is opening instantly, the other mkv takes 30 seconds or more
Both are H264 files.

Current Media Information - Codec tab, starts showing the file stream info after this time.

Network:
TaskManager is showing I/O Reads of 1000 before the file starts playing.
I/O Read Bytes is 2,238,900 bytes

When opening the file, I noticed a couple of I/O reads per second.
Very slowly increasing from 0 to 750.
Every second the ReadBytes increased by 1000 to 3000 bytes a second

I disabled Chapters for Matroska file format, but it didn't help.

Opening the same from from local disk, VLC starts playing instantly, with the same I/O reads count of about 1000

But other files also have about 1000 I/O reads before playing, but they do start instantly when openen on the network.
So 1000 I/O's is not the problem. There is some processing done by someone, probably VLC?

What did you change exactly? Just curious.

Run from a network share, which can give a speeds of 55MByte/s while copying files.
1.3Gb mkv takes 5 seconds to start, 1.7Gb takes about 7 to 8 seconds
900Mb takes about 3 seconds.

So it is definatly faster, but not instantly, as it started when run from local disk.

Im on VLC 2.2.1 and it takes 77seconds to start playing a 34GB MKV movie. during that time the network usage is 1.5Mbps up and down. When the movie starts playing then the network usage is about 30Mbps down. So the issue is not completely fixed?

Maybe a nice feature to add a timestamp UTC, or relative time since opening the file.

Which I have build, and it also starts quickly, but it will be closer to the latest official build.
I am used to SourceSafe and TeamFoundation for the last couple of years, so it takes some time for me to get used to GIT etc..

But your link has changes older than the date this msvc fork is, so all patches should be in.

But there is a workaround:
I can resolve the problem by removing LibMkv_plugin.dll
The file still get played, although VLC gives a warning about not recognizing the filetype.

Since this is one of the plugins, which is not in the source tree I got, (313 projects, but not the one with the problem), I can not debug the problem.

The problem is probably with the D:\Source\Repos\vlc-2.2.1.32-2013\modules\demux\mkv\Ebml_parser.cpp, which would be logical given the warning:
msg_Warn( p_demux,"MKV/Ebml Parser: m_el[mi_level] == NULL\n" );

So the fixes for corrupt files, introduced problems? Or many of my files are created with broken software, resulting in corrupt files, which do get fixed, but start a little slow.

Same issue here.
5GB MKV at 1.8MB/s took 10 secs to start and for mysterious reason in this "preload", my laptop is sending the same amount of data to my NAS...
For comparison I opened the same file with the MPC-HC player, no preload time and no sending back data.

I still have the problem in 2.2.6. Trying to play an MKV over a wireless network share is quite slow, and the time is proportional to the size of the MKV being played. This indicates that something in VLC is accessing the entire contents (or perhaps just most) of the file. I can confirm that the solution posted by @eta76 works - I renamed libmkv_plugin.dll and restarted VLC, it it immediately loaded the MKV and started playing it. I, however, got no error thrown at all - the MKV just started playing. So something in libmkv_plugin.dll is causing the entire MKV file to be read.

I looked at the source for Ebml_parser.cpp in 2.2.6 (as @eta76 also identified) and saw that there are a couple of instances of setFilePointer. I didn't follow all the way through, but my guess is setFilePointer reads sequentially until it reaches the desired location, and this is what's slowing down the open over the wireless network share. I hope a real VLC developer looks at this so he/she can fix it.
