Handling corrupt audio: how can I prevent loud noises?

I've got a video file that was recorded from a digital broadcast. There are a few interruptions in the broadcast. For the video part, this results in dropped frames, which is mostly harmless. Audio interruptions, however, result in really loud noise (glitches) as VLC tries to process garbage data. I'd estimate these glitches are at +30 dB relative to the normal audio levels of the file. It sounds like it's playing back square waves at maximum volume.
When I've got the amplifier cranked up a bit so I can hear quiet conversations clearly, the glitches are deafening.

Is there a way to prevent this? I usually try to find an alternate source for the recording, but that isn't always feasible.

Is there e.g. a filter that can detect this kind of corruption, and replace it with silence? I'd much rather have gaps than bleeding ears.

You should use the normalizer filter.
