VLC Crashes (does not even start)

Postby lankydave » 15 May 2015 13:19

I had a recent version of VLC installed on my Win7 and when I tried to play a particular mkv file I got an error message saying there had been an undefined fault and I couldn't do anything about it.
So, I upgraded to the latest version of VLC (2.2.1) and matters went worse. VLC flashes on the screen on double clicking the mkv file then disappears without even an error message.
Now, is there something wrong with this mkv file you are asking....(actually there are two different mkv files it won't play).
Because I need avi to play on my TV I use a program called ANY VIDEO CONVERTER. When I import the offending mkv file into AVC the video PLAYS with no apparent fault of any kind. Furthermore AVC converts the file to avi which VLC and any other media player will play.
I appreciate that I have given little or no technical details about the mkv files (BTW VLC will play other mkv files and mp4 etc etc) I could be persuaded to upload something (300 MB file !) or look into properties for details but the main purpose of this entry is to express my shock that VLC won't play something. I have a workaround - convert to avi - so it is not an urgent issue for me.
But the fact that VLC won't play something that another program will play would be an issue for VideoLan I presume.
Look forward to your comments (and questions ?)

It is still doing it. mkv files from various sources simply crash VLC. I send off the requested report but no response from anywhere, here included :(

Ah Well. I'll begin the search for a reliable video player, due to the lack of any response in here :(

Just out of interest, I "believe" (take everything with a pinch of salt) that VLC crashes because of embedded sub titles in the mkv (and sometimes MP4) files.
I use another video player now which has no probs of this kind.

I really cannot reproduce.
Same, it's playing fine for me, no crash at all.

You can try another video output module:

And/or disable/enable GPU acceleration:

You can also try to enable or disable some video options such as Overlay and/or Hardware YUV -> RGB conversions.

And/or try another audio output module:
