Why VLC logo is traffic cone(my theory)

Postby TheBigTime001 » 31 Jul 2011 02:24

I think the default(and only) logo is a traffic cone beacuse it's creator(Jean-Baptiste Kempf) is from Cone, France. J-B, is this correct? I never take time to read personal histories or anything like that, and nobody else whose posts I've looked at has seemed to have gotten a straight answer. Is my theory correct? I'm dying to know, because this will explain it to anybody who has a messed-up theory about this.
If we can simulate real life so accurately, then isn't our reality maybe just one great big simulation as well?

Hey...

I am not VLC's creator... VLC was started long before I came on the project... And no, the Cone story predates this quite a lot...

Well, if that's the case that you came onto the project after it was already around for a while, then that is ironic that its logo is a traffic cone and you happen to be from a place called Cone in France. Ha ha...

That's what I thought it was too the moment I saw what it says your location is on here.

Wow. It's been 3 years since I first started this post, and since then it's garnered quite a lot of interest (5,000+ views). But still there is no resolution to this topic.
Well, could please post true origin as best you know?

So the Wikipedia article is wrong, according to J-B Kempf. Also my initial theory, that the project has a traffic cone logo because of J-B coming from Cone, France, was also proven incorrect, as he came on the project a good while after it had started. Since this is obviously an important topic to a lot of people, could one of the admins with intel on this please provide a direct answer, or, if having reasons not to, provide a clue/hint to the answer? An answer would be something not only would I appreciate but I'm sure a lot of people as well. I'm positively nutty about all things VLC, so this would be awesome to know the answer to. Thank you for your time, I appreciate that you guys are REALLY busy, so if this can't be answered soon, I understand. Just that it would be neat to know a definite answer to, it sure confused the heck out of me when I first started using VLC, as to why a traffic cone was (and is) the logo.

I think the creators are ashamed to admit that the cone comes from a very simple need: quickly find an icon for a project with a life long "work in progress" status. Thus the cone.

Or so he sais ;)

Alright than Jean, give us this hint:
Does the story have something to do with traffic, or rather with the 'cone' shape?

This shape can be used as a megaphone (speaking-trumpet) to broadcast (acoustic) signal, this is the purpose of the videolan project.

Hmm... The developers are reluctant to give the exact story... This piques my interest even further. It is certainly something that would be fascinating for any hardcore VLC user to find out. I think the best way to give us the story would be to make it hidden away on the wiki... The best tactic I have seen so far is an indiscernible link, something like black text with no underline and a normal cursor, which appears perfectly ordinary. Going further, the web page should be non-indexable and non-discoverable for search engines, because, after all, if someone loves VLC so much they're willing to do so much hunting to find the answer, they should be rewarded, right? I understand if none of the devs want to do something like this, but it would be awesome and give the true VLC fans something to enjoy. Whatever you do, either way, it's awesome. P.S: I am not a VideoLAN shill; I just really like VLC! :D

Traffic cone's purpose is to stop the traffic or people from going in a particular direction. The symbol here can be suggestive of that "Look no more, The video player is here".

@mederi: For those of us who were not fortunate to watch this SCALE conference, is there a version of it archived on the web somewhere, and if there is, could you please provide a link? Either way, thanks for whatever answer is put up!
