VLC Android 4.4.2 Kit Kat Crashing a lot

I watch a lot of media on my phone (only thing I have atm since my laptop died) and I've noticed that VLC crashes quite frequently, especially when watching mkv videos on the phone or streaming anything over the network. But mostly when I stream over the network. Some movies won't even start.

I don't know about .mkv movies; this might be a fault of reading the file or task killing beacuse of preventing any damages. As for the Internet movies, there is nothing wrong; this happens even to me.

Other media players don't seem to have a problem playing media over the network. I've currently got the built in streaming player that came with my phone, MX player, VLC beta (current version), and the media player that comes built into ES file manager.

The one that works best and most often is the ES file manager media player, though it does not have .mkv audio support. It will play video just fine, it just doesn't have any audio output. As a test, I even downloaded the massive Star Wars despecialized edition (17.8gb, 1920x720) and ran it on my crappy phone, an LG Optimus Zone 2. The video played back flawlessly over the network with ES File Manager (no audio due to .mkv) but VLC had horrible frame drop and stuttering.

I understand VLC is in the beta (soft release) and that there will be problems. I just want to do my part in reporting what I experience so that potential issues can be addressed by the time I can afford a better media playback device (looking to save up for the new Nvidia Shield or a Nexus 7/8).

I'm not sure if it's a coding issue with the player or a streaming issue related to the player. Maybe the buffer settings aren't high enough for the video format I'm playing? Maybe the down scaling is causing performance issues (I watch 720p content regularly on my pc, but don't have special versions just for my phone's smaller screen)? Maybe my phone is just running out of ram during playback in VLC?

I'm really not sure what the issue is, but I usually experience the same kind of issues with MX player as I do with VLC. MX tends to reload a video using software acceleration when there's an issue, something VLC won't do.

I dunno. I've used VLC for years and it's one of my favorite media solutions for the massive amount of video I consume. I just wish streaming wasn't so bad at the moment (I stream over wireless between my PC and phone, virtually nothing is directly from the internet). Maybe the fact that my PC is on a 5Ghz band and the phone is on a 2.4Ghz band is causing issues? It seems to be fine when using other players, so I really don't know what the issue could be with VLC.

Oh, and the other problem I encounter is that when VLC does decide to work, I often get the message 'unseekable stream' when trying to resume playback from a particular spot. It makes watching somethings a headache when I have to restart from the beginning every time.

Try with different deblocking and chroma settings.

I have it set to automatic deblocking and 32 bit rbg chroma.

Try with different combinations. Say 'no deblocking' with YUV or RGB16.

Surely VLC must decode the video it receives over the line, no?

But if there's a problem with the way the program handles the line, how can changing playback settings fix that?

For example, if I want to watch the latest episode of Korra on my phone, I download it to my PC and then stream it from my hard drive to the phone with VLC. The player either crashes immediately, soon after starting the video, or at some other random point during playback. On top of that, the video says 'unseekable stream' which means that if I pause the video or try to resume it later on I have to watch it from the beginning, if it will even play at all.

However, if I just copy the video from my hard drive to my phone's memory card, VLC plays it back flawlessly with no seek issues and even remembers where I left off if I resume playback later on.

So yeah, how does changing playback settings fix that?

Why don't you make sure the streaming isn't broken with the beta version of this player? Nothing you've suggested has helped.

Well, seeing as it's working just fine for the developers here along with a lack of good faith on your part to test, then there's not much else that can be done...

'The streaming is working fine' intentionally vague and unhelpful.

1. Can you seek through media you are streaming? (I can't)

2. Does your streaming work with .mkv, .avi, .mp4, .xvid, ect? (Most of the time it only works with smaller files)

3. Does resuming media playback after closing VLC result in your media resuming from where you left off, or does it start over from the beginning? (With mine, I always start at the beginning, I can't resume from where I left off, and I can't seek to the part I want).

Mind you: THIS IS ONLY THE CASE WITH STREAMING ACROSS THE NETWORK. Normal playback from the device works fine.

So again, you should check to make sure the streaming is actually working with the player.
