Tell us more about what you're trying to achieve

And open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin if it's too long.

I too am recieving the same error message since updating from 2 to 2.0.1.

I am using vlc to stream video from a video capture device to be picked up as an http stream on devices configured to connect to it.

Normally i start vlc on startup with the command line:-

"C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" -vvv dshow:// :dshow-aspect-ratio="16:9" :dshow-vdev="USB 2861 Device" :dshow-adev="Line (USB EMP Audio Device)" :dshow-size="352x288" :dshow-caching=200 :dshow-video-output=-1 :sout=#transcode{vcodec=h264,vb=0,fps=25,scale=0.75,acodec=mp4a,ab=96,channels=2,samplerate=22050}:http{mux=ffmpeg{mux=flv},dst=:8085/} :sout-keep

I have tried to start vlc manually, configure the settings manually, including your verbose debugging option, however this causes the same error message, along with the application crashing completely.

Snapshot fails with JPEG selection in 2.0.1. PNG works. vcodec=h264 is broken in 2.0.1

I'm having this problem as well, except I'm trying to transcode a .wmv into a .mp4 using h264 video and mp4a audio. As far as I can tell the audio isn't being written at all, and something is messing up the video (it won't play in Quicktime, even though the settings are exactly as I've used in the past to encode for Quicktime playback).
I do this quite a lot, and it worked just fine in the last version (pre v2.0.x).

I'm not sure how to set message verbosity to 2 in the OS X client, but the message that gets printed when the error occurs is "avcodec warning: cannot decode one frame (1 bytes)" repeated about ~10 times.

Anyway, I'm going to have to go back to the previous version for now, as I can't really wait till later, I'll keep the current version installed somewhere to gather more info though, I just need to know what info is best and how to get it :)

Im sorry as im new to this forum, but is this a moderator informing us of a known issue with h264 in 2.0.1

If so, do we know if and when their will be a fix.

Add me to the list of users having this problem.

Following the instructions on this link http://wiki.videolan.org/Documentation: ... r_Versions, I have not been able to get the streaming feature to work. After going through all the steps, I get the message:
Streaming / Transcoding failed: VLC could not open the encoder.
Could it be the necessary files are missing? If yes, for streaming a MP3 or 4, or flv file, which lib file is used? If no, HELP! :!:

Running XP SP3, VLC 2.0.1, on 2GB RAM

There was some build issue of libav in VLC 2.0.1 so some encoder won't work.

Is there a build ready for testing? :D

You can try 2.0.2 nightlies. (2.0.0 in http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win32/?C=M;O=D )

:? On the client side, this build (v2.0.2) continues to stop playing the stream after the first file.

But, this is another topic to find a solution for...

Will continue to use v1.1.11 as the client.

I'm having the same problem with snapshots. I have switched the default to png but it would be nice to have a fix and be able to save as jpgs instead of converting to jpgs in my image viewer.

So I have had this since upgrading to 2.0.0. I have now updated to 2.0.2 and I am still getting the message "VLC could not open the encoder". I am trying to convert a stream to .mp4 on a Macbook Pro. I can paste the entire debug log if you want, but it's pretty huge!

Any suggestions?

NorthernNurse: is this a Mac OS X or Windows issue?

Got the fix:
There's a bug in the newest version where the jpg encoder isn't enabled.

Go to Preferences (in VLC's menu under Tools) and go to the Video category, change output preference to "png."

I selected the "MPEG Audio" codec for audio instead of MP4 and was able to convert an *.avi to an *.mp4 where I was previously having the same problem, if that's useful.

I had the same problem with versions 2.0, 2.0.1 and 2.0.2. Every time I installed a newer version, I got the encoder error when I tried to snapshot the screen. So, I kept going back to version 1.1.11 after every upgrade. I didn't realize that someone in this forum had suggested changing the picture format from jpg to png as a workaround.

In any case, I just downloaded and installed version 2.0.3, which has apparently solved the encoder problem. I left all my original preferences and settings from version 1.1.11 in place, including my custom interface, and it worked! I captured the screen as a jpg to my previously chosen folder in an external drive.

Just wanted to share my experience with this issue.

It turns out that updating to the newest version wasn't fixing this for me because VLC wasn't updating. When using the Update option from the About menu, it would download the update then crash. That's a separate issue, but the result was: I thought I was applying the fix but I still couldn't output snapshots as JPG.

So I just downloaded the latest version manually and installed, and now it's fixed, and JPGs output as normal. Just wanted to share in case anyone else was having the same problem.
