To the genius's who write the code:
I asked last year for help with Windows Extended Desktop....... and now I'm again asking.........with the all the genius's out there.....couldn't someone(s) make VLC with Windows Extended Desktop to include an idiot proof GUI checkbox as per eg: MS Power Point 'Presenter mode'?! To say it another way....my dream is to be able to have a checkbox that when checked will make the Video only go to ones Projector while leaving the Video Controls behind on the Primary......and auto set the resolution as per ones Windows Graphics Video Card settings!? Pretty Please

I could not find the info in the wiki or forum.
I followed the advice at

It worked fine on a Windows Vista laptop connected to a projector using VLC 1.1.11 and DirectX
However if I upgrade to VLC 2.1.10 no setting gives me an option to "Disply device" other than "Default".
So I went back to VLC 1.1.7
The only snag is that the FullScreen is often not optimized when I start a wide screen video clip causing me to have to hit "F" twice.

Is there anyone who understand the dual screen usage better and can document it in the wiki?

A few years ago I found instructions somewhere........but the nuisance was, if I wanted to use it at home on my Laptop screen, the I had to to manually change the settings back..........and then, to go out and do a 'show' manually back and forth........... grrrr

That's why I'm still asking for this 'boon'

I have VJ software that can handle this task GREAT....but that software with my Dual Core 2.2 and dedicated Video Card and only handle Mp4's well
Anything 'heavier' eg an AVI or MOV it can Choke

So I'd still LOVE it if some genius who writes this code could do this

I see genius JordanN did develop a front end for VLC at sourceforge.net/projects/vlc-show
and though it is old, it still seems to get positive reviews.

Thanks for your mutual interest! Alas the "VLC Show" did not work for me on W7 using VLC 1.1.9 nor the newest version ((( I kept getting 'error' messages that I could 'bypass', but to no avail (((

and WORSE
Now I can't get it to show Video using Windows Extended Desktop at ALL. I have to use Windows Clone View now (((((((((((((((((

But thanks for trying VLC Show - now I won't!

From my perspective, our need is so simple and common, I can not understand why we can get it....
Do we perhaps lack some understanding?

So try it?!

Set a System Restore Point before you do
and I would suggest installing it using WXP compatibility mode

and why there is no outcry????????????????

Hi Jean-Baptiste,

I would like to have a simple method to configure VLC as follows:
On a Windows PC with an external (dual monitor) projector connected
Run VLC on the Windows primary monitor
but when a video is played it should display on the secondary monitor (projector)
in full screen mode with no controls on that screen.

How to do it is not (clearly/understandable) documented in VLC or the wiki.
It does work sort of when using ActiveX on older Windows but even then the fullscreen resolution of the projector is not used by VLC causing part of the video to overlap to the other monitor.

Use VLC preferences, disable fullscreen control, disable OSD. In the advanced Qt preferences, set the fullscreen screen to 2. Restart VLC.

I understand that Preferences -> Interface -> "Show controls in full screen mode" should be un-selected. (Is it related to the "Embedded video" setting?)
I see it can also be done by the keyboard shortcut "Show controller in fullscreen" (hotkey is i)

However I can't find the "advanced Qt preferences". How do I learn about that?
Sorry, but I'm totally lost and don't know what Qt means in this context.

I was able to locate "QT" ( F....In Preferences, on the Bottom Left "Show Settings", you need to click ALL .....then "Interface\Main Interfaces\Qt")

And I did set "Define which Screen Fullscreen Goes to "2" to no Avail ! ( My Projector is number 2 in my Graphics Properties )

I'm getting Audio with NO Video at all !
I have the Control Window visible on my Laptop, but my Projector just has my blank Wallpaper

I did everything else

OK, I discovered that Qt has nothing to do with QuickTime.
I changed my main interface from Default to Qt and activated the extra qt4 interface. Restarted.
Spent an hour looking but
I still can't find the "advanced Qt preferences" or a place to select "Define which Screen Fullscreen Goes to"?

Running VLC 2.1.0 and 2.1.1
Win 7
Even the DirectX gives me no choice other than the Default display.

Preferences -> Interface -> Main interface -> Qt, and then look on the right for "Define which screen fullscreen goes".
I played with that setting from -2, -1, 0, 1, and 2, but the fullscreen video always goes to the monitor designated by Windows 7 as the "main display" (i.e. the display with the Start button). There seems to be no control from VLC over that.

I can then bounce the video to the other display with Windows' hotkey Shift_WindowKey_Right or Shift_WindowKey_Left, but then it is not set for the right resolution - (same problem I have with DirectX on Windows Vista).

Jean-Baptiste, are we missing something else?

PS I even tired the link from NZ you posted on 12/1,2 and I didn't have the option to select an external Display

Meanwhile
With a Blueray File on my Netbook my CPU goes nuts and the Video Stutters
Whereas
Ironically WMP has no CPU issues at all with the same Blueray File ?

Hi Matt!

It seems the bug with DirectX has been fixed in 2.1.3 Rincewind.
So I can upgrade from v. 1.1.7 where it used to work.
However, the problem of getting the videos full screen on the projector seems to be slightly worse with 2.1.3 than 1.1.7:
In 1.1.7 I could just hit F twice to have the video resized to full screen;
now it seems for some HD video formats I need to hit F (to get the framed window), then full screen that window by clicking on the square on the right-top of the frame, and only then hit F for the 2nd time.
Today's test was done on Windows 7.

It is still not what I really want, but works mostly.
You can give it a try, and tell me.

Thanks ) But thats nuts ! If I have to find that tiny icon for Full Screen then it defeats the purpose! Plus ...ironically......I was dealing with a Blue Ray MP4
and VlC was 'choking' on it.......whereas WMP could handle it..........soooo my current trick to deal with that is........I pre- position WMP full screen onto the Projector......then Minimize it! So I have my nice Windows 'background' up in extended Desktop! Then whens its time to play a Video.......as WMP is my default.....I just click on the file on my laptop, and it PLAYS full screen on the Projector!
