Release : VLC media player 0.8.4-test1

Postby dionoea » 26 Sep 2005 23:37

Dear VideoLAN users,

The VideoLAN team is happy to announce the first beta version of VLC 0.8.4
(Note: 0.8.3 was skipped because its technical improvements were too little)

Highlights from improvements include:
* Mac OS X interface:
- new dialogs (wizard, extended controls, bookmarks)
- drag and drop in playlist
* wxWidgets interface (default Windows / Linux interface):
- renamed from wxWindows
- VLC update checker (?)
* Skins interface:
- Partial support for tree playlist
* HTTP interface:
- CGI handling, you can now use external programs from VLC's web server
(like PHP for instance)
- Much richer controls
* Linux binary codecs loader. Now able to read WMV3 under Linux.
* UPnP service discovery
* Bonjour (Apple zeroconf protocol) service discovery
* Shoutcast output module to forward streams to icecast servers
* Internal strings handling is now UTF-8 based
* ActiveX plugin should now work outside IE as well
* New languages: Korean and Romanian
* Loads of bug fixes
(https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/query?sta ... .8.4-test1)

You can get a complete list by reading the release notes:
http://developers.videolan.org/vlc/NEWS

Binary packages are already available for Windows and MacOS X. You can
download those and the source code as well on:
http://downloads.videolan.org/pub/video ... 8.4-test1/

Remember that this is a beta version. Please test it heavily and report
bugs. Known bugs are registered in the trac database:
http://developers.videolan.org/cgi-bin/trac.cgi/roadmap

For the VideoLAN team,
Antoine Cellerier
dionoea

Portaudio still doesn't work (since version 0.8.2). Please remove the plugin (if you can't fix it), because it's useless!

VLC probably does not support this image format.

Resize to video

Postby Dandruff » 27 Sep 2005 16:42

With disabled 'Resize to video' (wxWidgets) there are (sometimes) artifacts (black squares and lines) produced in the picture when resizing the window! The artifacts are not visible in a taken snapshot. With enabled 'Resize to video' there a no problems (artifacts produced)!

This problem (introduced in version 0.8.2) only occurs when using DirectX-Output, not when using GDI- or OpenGL-output.

CD Extra

Postby Dandruff » 27 Sep 2005 17:12

Just tested an 'Audio CD' which also contains a Data-Track (Pascal FEOS - From The Essence Of Minimalistic Sound). I think this format is called 'CD Extra'.

Opening it via Volume -> Audio-CD, VLC then lists 13 Tracks/Titles, although there are only 12 Audio-Tracks on it. So it seems VLC also lists the last (Data) Track, which it shouldn't:

Could you please read the known issues in trac before reporting all these things?

1: portaudio: added to trac now
2: snapshots: already in trac
3: resize artifacts: known issue with wxwidgets
4: cd extra: not supported
5: volume bar: already in trac

3: resize artifacts: known issue with wxwidgets
This seems to be an issue of the DirectX-video-output module only, because there are no problems (with 'Resize to video' disabled) when using GDI or OpenGL output!

GDI

Postby Dandruff » 27 Sep 2005 20:10

With GDI video-output an error occurs, when you close VLC during video-playback (or paused video-playback). Doesn't happen with DirectX- or OpenGL-output.

edit: fixed in the latest nightly build (vlc-0.8.5-svn-20051101-0000-win32)

@ Dandruff: The German error messages says that an request in a certain memory block links to a another memory block and writing to the latter block fails. It was probably deallocated, but VLC still tries to use it.

Dandruff: Are you sure that your RAM does not have any errors or unwritable blocks? Do you experience random crashes sometimes?

@ Guest: without mentioning your OS, your graphic card, your DirectX version, your kind of movie and the used codecs, your kind of soundcard, etc. pp. your posting is useless.

RAM (Kingston RDRAM with ECC) is ok. No random crashes!

I've edited the error-description a bit:
It (always!) happens when closing VLC during VIDEO-playback (or paused VIDEO-playback) in GDI-Mode. 100% reproducable here.

The error doesn't occur when using DirectX- or OpenGL-output or when stopping the video-playback before closing VLC (in GDI-Mode)!

4: cd extra: not supported
ok, but shouldn't the cdda-module not only 'see' the audio-tracks (like a normal cd-player) then!?

foobar2000, realplayer and mediaplayer all only list the audio-tracks for example ... why does vlc lists 13 tracks when there are actually only 12 audio-tracks on it?

Because VLC (more accuratelly, the library we are using to access audio-cds) cannot differentiate between audio and data tracks. I agree that it should do that, but since it isn't implemented, it doesn't work. I'll create a ticket for that in our tracker so this isn't forgotten, but do not expect that to be fixed soon.

We actually thought about that, but if you want to ask just a single question on a forum, you usually don't want to register and leave your mail-address there. That's why Guest-postings are still allowed. AFAIK, we will stick to that.

VLC crashed while I was watching an H264 encoded mkv file. I'm running an Apple G4 533 dual processor, 768MB memory (still a peppy machine, even by todays fast standards). I got full audio in the file, but the video froze right off the bat. Will VLC ver 0.8.4 be fully H264 compatable by the time it leaves beta stage? Anyways, here's my crash report:

VLC crashed while I was watching an H264 encoded mkv file. I'm running an Apple G4 533 dual processor, 768MB memory (still a peppy machine, even by todays fast standards). I got full audio in the file, but the video froze right off the bat. Will VLC ver 0.8.4 be fully H264 compatable by the time it leaves beta stage? Anyways, here's my crash report:
Thank you for your report. Even though that machine is "peppy", i already have trouble decoding some mkv H264 samples with my G4 1.2Ghz, so don't be so sure :D

It shouldn't crash of course, but things like that simply DO happen once in a while. The codec is VERY new, in development by the ffmpeg team for less then a year now, while Apple has been developing their codec for over 3 years before it was even introduced. the ffmpeg team is also developing the codec for ALL platforms at once, and for all fileformats at once as well. This by defenition will mean it will take a time to mature.

Can you repeat this issue consistently? If that is the case we would very much like to get our hands on this sample. You could try to upload it to ftp://samples.videolan.org/incoming

Just be patient :D

Since 0.8.2 I am looking for an alternative. VLC crashed everytime something on my computer works, MSN, ICQ, TS, whatever.
