It HAS to be done.

As already stated its 2013 and 3D is not going anywhere, in fact, the demands are rising astonishingly fast.
We are entering into a 3D era where old film being converted in to 3D with magnificent results (Titanic, Jurassic Park, etc...).
Soon every media player will support 3D playback so you might as well be among the first ones.

VLC team, you can run but you can't hide.


PowerDVD is a great example of 3D compatible software, and if VLC is ever going to implement this feature I expect to be equal or better.

I don't know if this is known already but http://bino3d.org is a pretty good cross-platform, open-source (!) GNU GPL licensed 3D stereoscopic player that supports virtually all 3D formats out there.

I'd still love to see these features integrated in VLC though, but I guess many parts of the codes could be reused if you asked nicely.

As for now, the Devs put little significance (if any) on this topic, but in a few months 3D in media players will be a "must have" standard.
Right now the 3D TV & Gaming market is sky rocketing (2013). 3D Televisions are going up in quality and affordability and so is the quantity of 3D content.
Many small but very compatibly (and open source) players like Bino3D are showing up because of the realization of lack of good freeware 3D media players around.
I can assure that VLC will not lag behind other media players in 3D compatibility once it'll be more "mandatory" for Movie/Video watching experience.
The only question remains is, when? (will they ever bother to reply to this thread )

Or in layman terms:
Its 2013, For the love of 3D.
Come on Devs, we NEED 3D in VLC.

Nowodays, you can buy a 22 inch polarized screen for less than 200€ (LG D2242P-PN for example).
Movies will never be the same after that.
I'm using mplayer stereo3d=sbsl:ircl video filter.
It would be nice to have support in vlc.

Haha, years passed since this thread started and... nothing happened! Now they are already among the LAST ones to support 3D formats.

I am using a passive 3D monitor and since even YouTube provides different 3D output formats (such as interlaced) I can easily watch YouTube videos in 3D, even without switching my monitor into 3D mode. It's just a matter of a few clicks.

I would love to do so with VLC and all my MKV 3D movies (SBS & H-OU) as well. It can't be too difficult to provide an option to display any 3D source (SBS or H-OU) in deinterlaced format so you can watch it on a passive monitor without the need to switch the monitor into 3D mode first.

I am really disappointed.

The truth is that noone cares about 3D anymore.

It could be true for the VLC team. 3D is still a niche. But it is right now crossing the chasm. 3D will be mainstream. With 8K content in 2020, autostereoscopic 3D will give a decent resolution. With DLP-Link glasses like Optoma ZD302, you could watch 3D decently, according to AVSForums community (https://www.avforums.com/) and my personal experience. "No one" seems a little bit premature. When you know, that a lot of 3D porn content is available using Oculus Rift (I don't have one but still). Furthermore, iPhone 7 could get a 3D display: http://www.techtimes.com/articles/19700 ... iphone.htm

And according to halluciner.fr: in 2014, 3D market holds good and 3D quality is better than in 2013.

So, will you support stereoscopic 3D (MVC 3D, Side-by-Side, Top-and-Bottom)? Or IYHO, you don't care at all?

Because right now, with ownCloud + Embedded Videostream 0.0.7 plugin + PotPlayer, you could stream 3D content in a connected way. I hope the "stack" will be fully open source, when VLC will fully support stereoscopic 3D, if the VLC team wants to (with crowdfunding...?).

let me put it a bit differently. I habe powerDVD under Windows which is capable of doing the trick on my home office machine (IF I boot to windows which i seldomly do). I would like to have it on my HTPC which is running linux. There is more and more content available in 3D and I would like to enjoy it. looking at all other projects around I think VLC is the most mature and potent project to include such support. Looking at the discussion (since 2010!)
I am quite dissapointed, especially as it seems that work has been done on it, and now the priority has been lowered. A mistake in my eyes.

P.S.: The only reason i bought a blu-ray drive is 3D content. I have invested about 600€ (drive, TV and monitor, media) and I am willing to contribute 10-20€ to make 3D support happen.

Very hard, because, Quad-buffering OpenGL is not in normal linux drivers.
