VLC upscaling...More options for upscaling and sharpness?

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

VLC upscaling...More options for upscaling and sharpness?

Postby isamu » 19 Sep 2013 05:46

I have to say Jean, and to the rest of the VLC devs....

I am extremely impressed with the way my dvds look using VLC! You guys have done a wonderful job with this player!

However, I'm curious to know how this player does it's upscaling/resizing, and would like to know what are all the options available to the user? I know many of you are aware that FFDshow gives the user many options and one of them is resizing(aka upscaling). Is there a similar option buried somewhere in VLC?

Secondly, let's address the way it sharpens the picture. I am very VERY impressed with the way VLC does it! I know we have a simple "one-size fits all" sharpness slider, but are there more say, "in-depth" methods to tweak and play around with various sharpness settings in the preferences menu?

There are, if you disable overlay, you can change the scaling.

For the sharpen, no, one option only.

Thanks for the reply, but where do you change the scaling? Exactly what category/sub-menu is it in?

look for swscale in preferences.
Thanks buddy :)

Another question....under the video options, there is something called "Video Auto Scaling" and underneath that there's "Video Scaling Factor", where you can increase or decrease the number from 1.00. Is this scaling the same thing as the "resize" option in ffdshow? Is it upscaling the video's resolution? For example if the source is 480p and you set the scale number to 4.00, are you essentially quadrupling the resolution? Are there any benefits to doing so?
