Volumes not muted, but no sound on ipad retina

I'm trying to play an .mkv file. When I tried this on a nexus, I had a similar problem with VLC except I could just select the proper audio track, however there are a lot less options in the ios version of VLC. The sticky says there should be a selection for the track in the "controller" but I don't see anything. I switch the mute/silent off/on no change. And I turn the volume AND the ringer up all the way, no change. I've also tried doing it outside the app instead of in.

Some more info, The sound plays when i play it from my computer on VLC. But I tried another player on my ipad, which tells me that the codec is proprietary. So maybe the ipad VLC doesnt have the same codecs as the windows one.

Apparently, the codec AC3/DTS is patented and forbidden to play on mobile. Thanks to OPlayerHD for informing me. They say there is a work around. Looking into it.
