Unable to get closed captions

I am using VLC Windows Version 2.0.3. I have recorded HD tv programs through my digital tuner in the .wtv format and they all have closed captions. But when I play these files in VLC, I am not able to see the closed captions. I have enabled VBI and Teletext in the preferences and even after selecting track 1 in subtitles menu, I don't see the captions. I have also verified that the files has teletext stream embedded. Any reasons on why this is happening?

I have the identical problem, just as described by ramrajesh, the OP.

The source of my .WTV files is Windows Media Center 6.1.7601.17514 running on Windows 7 SP1. There does not appear to be an alternative output format available from Windows Media Center. Tuner card is a Hauppauge HVR-2250. Media source is US cable TV (Comcast) clear QAM.

VLC was tried with VLC 2.0.5 on Windows 7 SP1 64 bit, and with VLC 2.0.4 on Windows XP SP3 32 bit, with identical results for both HD and SD material.

Under Windows 7 SP1, Windows Media Player 12, Media Player Classic 1.6.6.6584 (ea09b34), and Video Redo TVsuite 4.6 do not see these closed captions, while VLC sees these closed captions as Teletext(telx), and offers a subtitle option for Track 1 (NOT for Closed Captions, however), but shows no subtitles when Track 1 is chosen as subtitle source on the right click menu, and just continues playing with audio and video.

These files play perfectly with regard to video and audio on all players that I have mentioned - the only problem appears to be closed caption recognition. Windows Media Center plays the captions perfectly, and CCExtractor GUI 0.64 can extract them correctly to an SRT subtitle file (not tested under XP).

I have been using VLC for years as a player for .TS files produced by the same tuner card running under Hauppauge's WinTV software on Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7 SP1, and this is the only time I have had a closed caption problem with VLC.

VLC is a great piece of work, for which many thanks.

I am having the same problem. Perhaps related, the messages log shows "avcodec debug: codec not found (Teletext)". I am on Windows 7 x64 running VLC 2.0.5 (x86), the official build from the website. In Windows Media Center, it displays the CC properly. I use VLC in the first place because it's a nicer player than WMC, and because I can speed up the video. It would be really amazing to get CC working as well. I hope it's legal to use VLC to watch the WTV files.

Is it CC or Teletext?

VLC claims the CC stream is a subtitle, identified as Teletext, but it does not display any text.

The TV input to Windows Media Center, which produced the WTV file, uses US digital TV closed captions, not Teletext. The sample clip is from a US PBS talk show, and the text was typed in "live" and was not synchronized with the video and audio - typical practice in the US for talk and news shows.

If I put the posted example through VideoRedo to make an MPG file, VLC then correctly identifies and displays the closed captions as CC for the MPG. From that, it looks as though VideoRedo is parsing the WTV format correctly, but that VLC may not.

104 MB, 3:58, from US Cable TV (Clear QAM) via Windows Media Center running on Windows 8.

VideoRedo Suite displays the subtitles correctly, as does Windows Media Center.

There appears to be no change from 2.0.5 as described by me and others above in this thread.

.WTV files from Microsoft Windows Media Center play OK, show the option for subtitle display in the right click menu, but do not display subtitles when requested to do so, just as with 2.0.5.

I tested this on the 32 bit version of 2.0.6 on Windows XP SP3 (32bit), Windows 7 (64 bit) and Windows 8 (64 bit).
I have not tried the experimental 64 bit version of 2.0.6

I have this problem as well. VLC 2.0.7, Windows 7 64-bit, WTV files recorded from UK broadcasts.

It affects WTV files but not TS files generated from the WTV files (open in VideoRedo and save as TS): TS files display fine when Video | Subtitles Track is set to "Track 1 - English" whereas although the same option is available for WTV files, selecting it does not cause the subtitles to be shown.
